Fuel pump noise?

My 2005 2.0L Zed has 15,000 miles on the clock and runs without fault. I live in central London so she only gets used at weekends. On starting the other day there was a fairly loud humming sound from the back of the car sort of like a distant aircraft or helicopter in the sky - it eventually went away after about five minutes of driving. Did not re-appear that day but the following weekend on the first start-up, same again.

My thought is that there is probably a fuel pump and maybe the week of non-use drains it or for some such reason it starts to make a noise? It is not the exhaust rubbing the bodywork as the noise is constant and does not change if I rev the engine.

Any ideas anyone please?

I had this for a while. I took it to a local garage where I was told it wasn't likely to suddenly fail, so I left it and it went away.

As a footnote it was suggested I shouldn't use supermarket fuel.

Good luck to you 1340fxd. I'm on my third fuel pump...see thread http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=10346&start=0

So far so good, but to help it along a bit I'm now sticking to Shell V-Power.

Z4Z4 not so lucky it seems.

I get a loud computery/fuel pumpy whine whenever I unlock the car, and it lasts for about 5 seconds, but that's it and then it's silent. Been told this is very normal?
