Fuel Level Sensor not Working

In my 2003 Z4 around a week ago when I got a full tank the car only read it as around 2/3rds full and then when it got down to that actual fuel level it started working normally. What could cause this?
 
I’ve had this a couple of times after filling several times with market petrol and both times it resolved after refuelling with Shell’s petrol which is claimed to have additives to prevent sensors from clogging. Don’t know if it’s just an urban myth and it has resolved just by coincidence.
