Fuel Filler Cap

Is there any 'security' on the fuel filler cap? Mine flips open manually and then you just twist the cap, so anyone could come along and open it - but it looks like there might have once been some form of mechanical control or something?

Does anyone have anything different, is mine broken or was it an option mine doesn't have?

Mine too, stand next to the filler and press lock, mine moves slightly and you can hear the lock close

You can see the lock too if you open the flap and lock the doors.
It's only a little plastic pin which pops out of the rear quarter. On my E46 M3 it went wrong and I replaced the plastic rod - only cost a few quid.

Ahh, maybe I've only tried it with the car unlocked - I'll give that a go. It does look like there's some form of lock, I just thought perhaps it wasn't engaging...

Cheers for the responses - if it doesn't work I'll let you know (and add to the list of warranty claims for when I eventually take it in!)

Easy way to check is to open the flap, lock the car, close the flap (or try to as it should be blocked from closing fully), and then open the car and see if the flap jumps shut.

If it does, then it means the little locking pin is coming out of the recess properly.

If it doesn't (or the flap closes fully with the car locked) then it looks like the locking pin is not coming out and has probably become detached from the mechanism - seemed to be a common problem on e34s (assuming it's the same system).

You can see roughly how it works from the ETK diagrams (#s 18-23)

My locking pin failed in locked position, I only noticed when I tried to fill up, miles counter read 0 miles left, and I was stuck !!
Made it back to Sytner, they chopped the offending item out so I could use the car, and fixed it under warranty.

Isnt there a green plastic pull thing in the boot with a petrol pump icon on it ? What does this do ?

Pity your garage didn't know this, could have saved themself (or BMW) some cash........

Quote from the handbook:
Releasing manually
If an electrical malfunction occurs, you can
unlock the fuel filler door manually:
1. Remove the covers of the tail lamps by turning
the lock to the right; refer also to
page 93
2. Pull the luggage compartment trim panel
slightly toward the interior.
The green button with the fuel pump symbol
becomes visible
3. Undo the adhesive strip and pull off
4. Pull the button
The fuel filler door is released.
Pull on the button slowly and carefully
as it could otherwise be torn off.

ok - now Ive tried and mine doesnt lock either :(

I can see where the lock should be etc...

anyone know how hard is it to replace?

I tried mine at the weekend and turns out it defintely doesn't work - it's been added to the warranty list (which also includes a headlamp washer stuck open, driver aid warning lights coming on at start up, and internal wheel arch panel having worked itself loose), I wonder how long a list I can accumulate before the warranty expires in May...

Just make sure you renew, Mine went in today because I had a leaking roof, because of a doggy seal. Something to do with my window sitting to high, bill was over 1K :o Luckily all covered under warranty.

Hi everyone,

I want to have a go at repairing my locking pin on the petrol flap, but I'm one of those people that I need full step by step instructions on how to do it !

Anyone help, please!! !

Its not just the worry of someone stealing your fuel, but its a worry in case some joker thinks it would be a good idea to stick something other than petrol in the tank! :fuelfire:

Thanks.
