Fuel/Engine Management Light

MOT Day... Driving the mile from my house to the station an engine management light comes on for the first time since ownership :cry: The engine felt lumpy on idle

I rang up my local indy specialist and they said 'supermarket fuel'

Id filled up with tesco high octane the night before :headbang:


Ive Never had a problem with other high octane fuels (no previous fuel loyalty), so rulling out the ecu adjusting to the petrols dfferent charcteristics..

Anty thoughts?
 
Ive always run my 2005 2.5 on tesco juice, 95 ron. Never had an issue. I do put redex through it every 3-4 months. Try adding redex at your next fill up. You can buy it in tesco halfords etc for £4. Has cleared minor emission issues before on other cars for me. Mine gets asda fuel and very rarely shell. Never misses a beat.
 
Badflaw, so did your car pass the MOT?, I was under the impression that any warning lights on the dash was an instant fail now.

First of all, there's loads of threads and opinions on this very common fault. So when the light illuminates it is not always for the same reason. I would say the most common fault is a design flaw from BMW. Too sensitive a sensor for example.
Secondly, I'd be cautious of taking advice from your 'local indy specialist' if they're going to blame supermarket fuel so readily, as anyone who has looked at this fault knows only too well the problems as mentioned above.
A sensors job is to send an electrical signal to the dash when sensing a component fault. If the warning light extinguishes after a certain amount of time then you can suspect an over sensitive or faulty sensor. Especially if it is intermittent or random.
I personally would either wait a while to see if the warning light clears on it's own or delete it using an OBD then see if it reappears permanently. :)
Also if more than 80,000 miles say,look into getting it terracleaned rather than reddex.
 
Changing fuel types seems to cause this. Best to stick to one brand of fuel if possible.

Mine did it shortly after it filled up with ESSO, not my usual and many others have found similar.

Wouldn't be so bad if when the emissions light came on the car was running c**p and you knew something was actually wrong with your car. :thumbsdown:
 
Have you opened the oil filler cap recently....

Mine started to idle eraticaly and threw a code after I had taken the engine cover off (And filler cap) to change the plugs. Although the cap was on it hadn't seated correctly, O2 sensor and MAF sensor info not in sync due to air being introduced after the MAF. Cleared the code fitted the cap correctly and all good again :D .

I beleive the fault was down to fuel. I c had been swapping between standard and high octanes.
It also didnt like Tescoshigh octane fuel.

However now I have stuck to my guns ,and the tesco high octane fuel- the lights stopped ...er..... lighting
