Fuel Economy

Yes this subject yet again! :D

My 2.5si has recently dropped alot of miles from the tank. I used to get around 400 miles from a tank but now I struggle to get 300-310.

Does anyone know why? I drive sensibly (most of the time) but I cant seem to get more than the 310 miles a tank mark.

(How many times can I put Tank in one thread!!)

New to Z driving - so can't comment on that.

But on my last car, when it was icy last winter, my fuel economy was markedly worse than normal (20-25% ish, so matches what you are saying roughly) - I put it down to a combination of driving around slowly/carefully and having heater etc on max more of the time. Imagine heated seats must hit the economy a bit if you have them and leave them on more too?

The temperature will have an effect, and I bet you're doing more & shorter trips in the bad weather.

Mine can go from 320 on a tank to 180 on a tank depending on the week I've had.

Do you do a lot of short trips? I do.. I'm getting 18mpg from the 35i at the moment. Its a fairly obvious cause.. the weather. Not only are you likely using every gadget, but the engine will be pouring more fuel in for colder operation. Engine also takes longer to warm up, more fuel. In my old e85, I got about 23mpg in summer knocking around the city, and 20 in winter. You should find in summer, mpg is quite different.

If you do long trips, then either a fuel grade change, or heavier right foot ;)

As said above, Its just due to colder weather -

Slower Driving
More short trips
More wheelspinning and drifting in the snow :driving:
Engine/Transmission take much longer to get to operating temp
Denser air = more power = more fuel (As petrols cannot deviate from optimal mixture)
Make sure your tyres are ok, as they're colder, they will lose pressure.

Mine has similarly dropped from ~375miles to ~325. My old diesel used to feel it much worse as the engine wouldn't even be at operating temperature after 10miles!

Just noticed the reply on this. My clutch does feel strange but I was putting it down to the stupid CDV. It has a juddery feeling in 1st-2nd gear if I dont lift straight off the clutch... fuel economy still pants!

I put it down to the cold weather... in summer with the roof up i could get close to 400 miles on a steady motorway sprint... Just did the same journey last week and the tanks limit was closer to 300 miles.

My seat heaters and rear demister are on more.. but not 100miles worth a fuel more!
