Fuel Economy From New?

Hi All.

Just picked up my new E89 23i Highline Edition Z4 last Friday, and have done a mix of different driving styles (mostly motorway, some town driving), and where the book quotes 33mpg combined, and 45 (i think?) extra urban, I've only managed to get 21.3mpg.

The car had 25 mile on when picked up from the dealer, along with a full tank of fuel. Being a new engine I've taken it easy, not going over 3... 3.5k rpm, roof has been up most of the time (rain! :(), air con hasn't been turned on and haven't taken it out of 'Normal' mode. I've basically tried to see how good mpg I could get - but 21.3mpg seems incredibly low? The onboard computer quoted 27.9mpg average from the tank (reset when I picked the car up), but 259 mile, with 46 litres at 130.7p (£60) is definately not 27.9mpg!

The dealer said the engine needs to loosen up, and it will gain a lot more as I put more miles on it, but I can't see it managing to get *that* much better. Basically looking for other people's experiences - did this happen to everyone, and did it get better (and by how much)?

Feeling fairly disheartened with it tonight!

Thanks
Paul

very tight sure things should get better, but it is a sports, enjoy you only live once.

Just worked it out from an online calc, not the app on my phone. It's actually 25.5mpg which isn't too bad. Question still stands as to whether it will get better?!

Suppose it's true that you only live once. Feel a bit happier now I've worked it out at 25mpg though!

Is this off the first tank?

Dealers rarely FILL the tank, just put in enough to get it to show full on the gauge, in a lot of cars that can mean at least a couple of litres short of a full tank, if not much more.

Oh and I bet your app is set to US gallons!

Welcome by the way :)

Yep it's the first tank. Pretty certain it was filled to the brim - dealer said he couldn't get anymore in - and he seemed a fairly genuine guy.

The app was set to US gallons :-(! Turned out my previous car (civic type r) was actually getting 32.9mpg not the 27 I thought it was! Doh.

Still hoping it'll get better than 25 once it's worn in a bit.

Fear not, leave it a while and then do a brim to brim you should get 30 mpg easy unless it's all stop start. I drive mine to Bristol and back every week and my average is about 38 mpg.

Welcome :) You need to do it over 5 tanks of fuel then take your average and as said wait for it to run in a bit first, just enjoy your new purchase for now
