Fuel economy amazing (ish)

This week I drove to Cornwall and back again - total 600 miles
On the way there A class roads all the way -26mpg
On the return mostly motorways where I reset the computer a couple of times
At at a steady 72mph using the cruise control I saw 43mpg!!!
At a steady 83mph again on cruise 36mpg
The overall mpg for the whole 600 miles was exactly 30mpg
I am very pleasantly surprised at how economical it is on Motorways as it is low 20s around town.
It is better on the motorways at 70mph than the wife's 2 litre diesel Tiguan.
The car is a 2007 3.0si se coupe.

Al the figures are from the car's computer so probably not that accurate

There's no doubt the 3.0si can return some impressive mpg results if you are on a constant feathered throttle (or cruise control) on the motorway. I generally achieve 36-38mpg and this is very useful at times.

The problem is that it needs a lot of restraint to do this - if you use the performance then the mpg drops alarmingly and then it takes a heck of a long time and a great deal of effort to pick that figure up again - if you ever can! :( Spirited driving results in low 20s for me. Using those 6 cylinders certainly takes big bites out of the fuel. . . . but it's worth it :D

:driving:

yep mine too showed 38mpg when i first got it, all tyre pressures where out lol. Not tried it since.

Cant fault the engine for efficiency, old renault 2.0 only saw 42mpg on mways

I just wish 6th gear revs where lower then 2.7k

Had mine for 3 years and this weekend done 320 miles predominantly motorway 70 and a couple of short trips averaging 34mpg. Over 38 for the motorways... :D

I think the 6 cylinder BMW engines of recent times have been superb for fuel economy. By contrast, my mates old 2 litre Alfa Romeo barely returned 30mpg - and it was SLOW. And from some jap turbo motors, my mates Evo 8 got around 17mpg, less on a hard run. And similarly, the Scooby Impreza does nearly as bad on around 20-24mpg, tops.

My old 3.0i roady could return 38mpg when I used it for commuting. It seldom went below 28mpg, even on some of the more enthusiastic forum runs.

My current zed doesn't do quite as well, but with 343hp, that's not surprising. On a long run I can get 30mpg, and on a hard run I comfortably get over 20mpg.

All good :)

///M returned 33.1 mpg on the trip to Silverstone over the weekend.
Was very impressed with it and although the traffic was grotty it made for a pleasant place to be crusing along the M1.

37.1 mpg on my drive up to work last night (on the onboard computer, so slightly lower than that)! 25 miles through slow London traffic and 75 miles of motorway. Pretty pleased with that anyway!

Worcestershire and back over the weekend in the M coupe...

290 round trip.....32.9mpg average inc a bit of a blast up the toll road
