Fuel Economy - 2.5i - something ain't right...

All car trip computers are pretty innacurate.The only way to see exactly what you've done to the gallon is the following.
1/ Brim the tank and note the mileage
2/ Empty the tank in the normal way by driving the thing.
3/ Brim the tank again and note the mileage
4/ Take the number of litres and multiply by .22, this gives you gallons.
5/ Divide the miles driven between fill ups by the number of gallons and hey presto, you have your true MPG.

Simples..........

I divide total litres used by 4.546 to give me gallons, which give the same answer anyway. That's what I do after every filling.

i usually get 32-33MPG on my mixed run to work. it includes some town driving and motorway (with traffic).

in the colder weather im finding i get more like 29MPG. that may have something to do with heaters etc as well as the ambient temperature.

i did a run around newcastle city centre today and i was getting about 23MPG after about 20 miles.


it all depends on where you drive, and how enthusiastically your foot uses the throttle etc etc.

The only thing i dont like about my car is that it should have had a 6th gear, the fuel economy would be far greater

Probably just the cold weather, petrol engines use nearly twice as much petrol when cold than when hot and take a lot longer to get up to operating temperature in this weather. Add in the fact that oil (engine, gearbox, and diff) doesn't get as warm and is thus thicker and you soon get quite a loss in economy.
