Fuel Consumption on 2.5 Si Sport (07)

I 'hope' this is not an actual problem!

After a couple of week's ownership, the best I've achieved is 20.1mpg according to the TC. This was 10 miles smooth motorway in 6th and 10 miles free flowing urban. It's a little concerning as nowhere near published achievable numbers. Any ideas? The engine is very quiet and smooth. Hoping it's as simple as resetting something!

TIA

I used to get 33-34mpg with normal driving or down to 28mpg when heavy footed.

To be fair though you need to do a full tank, 10 miles on a motorway isn't very informative, to many variables over a short distance.

I've done circa 10 'there and backs' to work which is 2 miles urban and 5 miles motorway, TC reports 18.6 for this trip. I put that down to the short journey/cold car but the 20 mile trip has got me a little concerned. I was expecting to return about 30mpg on paper tbh. I've not put my foot down as yet, as apparently the Bridgestone RFTs are useless :|

EDIT
Thanks for replying srhutch :) So you used to drive one of these? I still feel very excited about my purchase, just a couple of reasons for me not to relax. The MPG reported by the TC, and tramlining which appears to be rft related. This means I don't have 100% confidence in the car yet :(

Original RFT's are horrible, most put Falken 452's on which help with traction in the wet and tram lining.

With regard to mpg you really need to do a full tank on your regular driving pattern and work it out yourself not using the OBC, but as said 10 miles is nothing it will go up and down to frequently to get a good reading.

I keep waiting for my old one to pop up on here, but Iwould be sad to see it now :(

Montjeu, as Steve has said you need to do more journeys, brimming the tank and working out the consumption manually. Do that for a couple of tanks at least, and that will give you a good idea of what it will be like.

Hard to believe bmw released a car that was so slippery as standard. I'm ready for it now but the first time my heart must have skipped three beats! There's a bit of the north m1 at m25 junction which is all off camber, woah :o

Previous owner of mine is from Cov. Probably largish guy as he brushed the sports seat on entry and exit :P

Will take this advice Wondermike, thanks.

Well I measured a full tank manually, and the trip computer is correct. I'm achieving 21 mpg. It seems very low compared to the figures on paper.

Hi

I would be dissapointed with mpg as low as you say.

I can only compare with my 3.0 which when booted returns 28mpg and on a long run (motorway) returns 34mpg at 80 mph plus.

Has for the tramlining. I was going to sell mine but realising from the advise of members that rft were the cause i ripped em off and replaced with bridgestone potenzas, none rft. I have never looked back, different car altogether. Oh, then stuck some eibachs on and yet again, considerably better.

Take it in and get it checked out.

Good luck!

That's very low, even if I pushed mine the lowest was around 27-28mpg. I get 23+ out of my ///M

I get a solid 29mpg pretty much everywhere, this is just from the onboard computer, haven't bothered
caluclating it myself.
This is a 2.5si sport 06 roadster with Falken 452's, doesn't completely cure the tramlining but it makes it a
much more comfortable car to drive. Also worth getting a Hunter alignment done.

Try some simple things to eliminate easy fixes. Change your air filter, check your tyres are at the correct pressures, and if you feel up to it, change the fuel filter. If none of these work, might be worth a trip to a BMW dealer or local specialist

Thanks for the advice all.

Regarding the tramlining I am going to get some non rft when mine wear out. Doesn't seem so bad now I am prepared for corrective steering.

Regarding the consumption, I've conacted the seller and they've agreed consumption looks high. Going to pay for a one hour diagnostic from Halfords fwiw!! See what it throws up and take it from there.

Hi, I've had my 3.0 Z4 from 2003 for 4-5 years. I've always achieved 34-35 mpg and even on short journeys (say, 5-6 miles cross country) it'll do close to 30 mpg. Not particularly easy on the accelerator....

So since May I've had this problem!

MPG has settled around 25 permanently, completed a round trip recently of 170 miles clear bare m/way, still 25.

In June I gave it back to the dealer for a week, they reckoned that they completed every test possible apart from stripping the engine and still couldn't find anything wrong. As it was within manufacturer's minimum parameter (the manager apparently drove it home to manually measure  ) they weren't going to do anything for me, and recommended I sell it on!!. That conversation ended with me losing my temper

After June I decided to live with it until next service, as I only drive relatively short distances, and see if anything came up. However over the last few weeks I've detected the distinct smell of fuel when I've got into the cabin, at least I think it smells like fuel. Is this possible? Could fuel/fumes somehow be getting into the cabin area?

Hi guys,

Just bought my forsy Z4, a 2008 2.5si Sport, with 40k. Bought it just in time tfor my annual drive to Italy, and returned 32mpg over the 2300 mile trip...had to concemtrate a hell of a lot when going over 90mph due to tramlining and possibly another issue with the steering...is it correct that camber cannot be adjusted on the cars?

Yes, 25mpg is too low on a 170 mile trip. I did 200 miles down to Cornwall the other day and I got 30mpg average! Yours does not sound right!

Petrol will evaporate if it left out, so you wouldn't see a leak. This might be something to start looking at.

I wonder if you could but some UV die or something in an check after you have used the car a bit. (Obviously don't do this as it may harm the engine, but there might be something out there which does the same thing)

my 07 2.5si consistently shows 23.5 - - and over 15000 miles thats its average

i can do a mway run at 80 and get it up to 28 - bit then a couple of days running around my normal run (15 miles to train station on back) it goes back down to 23.5.

I have a 4.0l discovery that isnt much worse

maybe a k+n filter ...
