Fuel Consumption from a 3.0

Potential silly question - those of you getting high mpg; are you all driving sensibly any conservatively to get these numbers? Anyone here with a 3.0si AUTO?
 
I try and drive smoothly, but quickly. Long and the short of it is if you drive smoothly you'll get better economy, even driving fast. I can't complain at an average of 31.7 since I've had the car (computer number, I've not manually worked it out)
 
Done 450 in a single tank of bp ultimate (London to Warrington and back) cruise control set a 71; small hours of the morning so no need to brake at all.

Good point actually, perhaps people should state what type of fuel they're running on with their numbers, my best of 41mpg from a tank is on standard supermarket unleaded - I'm still yet to experiment with more premium stuff.

Just got an E89 30i auto so will be tracking mine from here on via Fuelly.

Filled it when I got back from dealer (they didn't surprise surprise :roll: ) but didn't check that pump hadn't cut out before it was full. I think it was a duff reading cos when I looked at gauge and miles it was scary :cry:

Anyway, made sure I went back and brimmed it to start the readings running from here. Trouble is, it's started raining now so it aint gonna get much use and back and for to work is no test at so short a distance. Not going to be gumming up my engine and wasting fuel so it'll be a while before meaningful readings come through I am guessing :wink:
 
My trip to Leeds and back was also back to back tested with my mates 325i E46 which returned around 36mpg IIRC, I think the 6 speed box makes the most difference dropping the high speed cruising RPM by about 500, he was at 2900rpm @ 70mph and I sat at 2500rpm.
 
It's easy to get it high. Just don't accelerate hard or do unnecessary accelerating/braking.

I had my trip computer on 41mpg after a trip from Leeds to Whitby and then back again the other day...

I think good tyres and these new oils help alot with losses too... the new Asym 2 tyres and the new blend 5W30 oils seem to have helped me reach over 40mpg trip readings much more often than I used to.

i got 42 ish once on a motorway cruise and a few 1ers in there. ..one for about 20 mins
34 down to 28 tootleing in town...
gently with the foot and foresite is the secret
oh a £6 + a gallon ha ha
 
Couldnt quite keep it at 40 on the return journey. 37mph on 450 miles of mixed road is still a pretty good return though.

Oh ........ and she broke the 75k mile mark too (just as we crossed the Welsh border 8-))

Maybe they get better mpg as they get more miles on them?

I still think half of my gains are from decent Asym 2 tyres and the new blend 5W30 oils... I can easily achieve 40mpg on a constant 60mph motorway run.

I'm certain that it has gone up and I never used to achieve that as easily, but the only variables that have changed are tyres, oil and a 100k mile engine :D
