Fuel cap doesn’t lock

Hi all!
New niggle today.
Fuel cap lock solenoid makes a loud ’Clack’ but no pin comes out, i.e. it doesn’t lock anymore.

Anyone solved this?

Z4M Coupe.

Cheers

Hi there...had this issue when I first got my z4. Most probably the rod is misaligned. It moves but doesn’t come out of its hole. You can remove the black plastic surrounding the fuel filler cap and look at the rod. Be careful not to drop any plastic parts or screws inside the fender..... :headbang: I have big hands so it was a pain to shoot the rod back into the hole where it is supposed to come out...i also had to wiggle the actuator a couple fo times to get the exact alignment. Good luck.

If you need to remove the solenoid, it is accessible after removing the rear wheelarch liner. Fiddly but not difficult.

You should be able to watch the action of the plastic pin with the fuel flap open - click the key fob a few times. I changed mine at 34K miles as the surround (nothing more than a hollow guide tube) was badly worn. Think a new one was £5 or £6 from an ebay seller. Very quick to change and a dab of vaseline or alike will help the action.

I expect it’s the same arrangement as on my R50 mini...there’s a solenoid with a long rod that pokes into the lid to lock it. The rod parted company from the solenoid on my mini....meant that I arrived at a petrol station unable to open the filler cap ha!

No need as I recall - get the part it (looks a bit like a biro cap with a larger hole) if the old one is still in (mine had fallen out) pull it out with a pair of pliers and push the new one home. I'm sure I didn't have to remove the cable/plunger just worked over it as it went through the hole.

Hey thanks for reply, I can only find this atm?
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/314002083852?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=Ti5u7ufhSSu&sssrc=2349624&ssuid=FN7nC8m1SQ6&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

What did you search for a new rod and any tips on getting it in.

Looking at that pic, I'm not quite sure how you'd get the new bit threaded back through the guide loop?
May well have to fit a new one.

No. If I understand your post you only need this:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/264927154986?var=0&mkevt=1&mkcid=1&mkrid=710-53481-19255-0&campid=5338749392&toolid=20006&_trkparms=ispr%3D1&amdata=enc%3A1nIfnlml5TGWBxKd5cr1Diw96

The fitment list includes E85 and E86 but you could always message and check with the seller.

Ah ha. So we are assuming the pin has snapped off, but you're thinking it's still there but not lined up?

That was the case with mine - which I where I came in when my old comment was quoted. Haven't been here for months (its another long story) but happened to log in and find the notification.

Pull the guide out and you should be able to see the plunger; fish it through the hole then with the fuel flap wide open lock and unlock the car the plunger should move in and out of the hole. If it does slip the guide over the plunger and push home into the hole. Five min job!

PS glad to see you; Jock; Jingle et al are all OK!

We're all good thanks.
Jock is making a good recovery which is great news.
We all thought you'd been a bit quiet.
All ok I hope?

 Tried to remove the guide and snapped a chunk out of it it didn’t look like the two holes had screws in or was I removing it wrong. One can of worms opens another
