Fuel Cap Cord

I'll get the receipt at lunch time from my car.
Personally I like the rubber there to catch the cap if you drop it, and/or it makes it easier to place in the pump handle (so you can hands-off fill), without worrying as much about it dropping and rolling under the car or something.
So I have a spare filler cap going, and my old gear stick.

Never had a car with a cord before will be interesting on my first fill up!
The benefit of the strap is that the cord is fatter where it runs near the car, and due to the length, it automagically places itself like a rubber barrier between paintwork and the cap in the holder on the fuel flap.
That is a clever design imo. Can't drop it and lose it, and when you 'holster' the cap the rubber cord also protects the car paintwork...

Well after only my 2nd use I look to have snapped mine exactly at the point where it connects to the cap (unless this is meant to be detachable)..
Mine's been broken from day one, I always jam the fuel cap in the handle of the petrol pump handle so I don't have to hold it when filling up.
I'm so cool. I can then do the whole Steve McQueen pose leaning up against the car....

The green "column" inside the cap will fit in the green ring near the hinge of the fuel flap. I needed someone to point this out to me as well, not the most obvious gadget despite the colour coding. I always suspected the string was not long for this world.

New fuel filler cap + cord, clearly updated, the cord is a new design, will post pics for those interested.

Yes, they changed the design, the old one was all rubber with a cylindrical section, the new one has a slim plastic "bullet" in the mid section, presumably to prevent the cord from kinking and snapping. No recall on that, then, BMW? (Presumably they changed the design because the old one was shite, and didn't want to shell out). Interestingly, I changed mine because my banjo ring was too slack for the little knob, and kept slipping off (keep it clean, boys & girls!). l Also changed the solenoid at the same time, (a PITA, having to remove the wheelarch liner), as a different knob had snapped off the plastic locking pin trying to nick petrol!
Got detailed pics of that, and was going to do a write-up, but it seems hard to pot up pics on here for a Numpty like me

really? first think i noticed when i got the car. the garage kindly gave me a thimble of fuel and some directions to a station and it seemed kind of obvious when i opened the cap.... now how it locked perplexed me for a bit till i noticed the cap moving when i locked the car
