Fuel and air con

Two topics really but I noticed in the manual that it recommends the premium grade fuel although it can run on regular which I have been putting in until now. Just filled up today with premium for the first time but haven't had the chance to notice any difference yet. Question one is do other 35is drivers use premium and does it make a diffence to either performance or MPG and is it worth the extra money?

One a similar subject on my previous Zeds (25i & 28i) I didn't notice much if any difference in MPG when the aircon was being used has anyone noticed any difference with the 35i?

Yes I do know that with the roof down aircon is free :)

There are loads of posts on this topic and none have ever come to a sensible conclusion other than "Bung in what you want"

As for aircon - I use it in my tin top cars 100% of the time - The Z4 only comes out with the roof down and if I have to put the lid on while I'm out the aircon goes ON.
I think that you will see little loss of MPG on the 35is as the air con pump will take only a tiny portion of the engines output.

The aircon is free with the roof down - however i have used it roof down when it was very hot in Europe - a blast of chilled air at the chest and face was very welcome

Honesty , the price difference between push fuel / ordinary fuel is nowhere near depreciation :D

I'd always go for the higher octane fuel in a turbo car simply because if anything goes wrong you've got more headroom before problematic detonation occurs.

On the Z4 if you're worried about the fuel efficiency then drive around with the top up because that seems to get an extra 3-4mpg at 50mph! Fuel usage with AC on/off on my 120dx was so small that a 5C temp ambient changes resulted in larger fuel usage differences.

On a car with more than 100hp/litre it's a good idea to use the premium fuel I feel. It gives you slightly better MPG as well.

I get annoyed when I can't find anyone selling it when out & about. 99.99% of cars here don't need it so it makes sense nobody sells it. Still annoying.

I always use premium fuel seems the sensible thing to do , wouldnt know about air con because I set mine to Auto so just leave it on

The recommended fuel is shown on the filler spout isn't it?

At a guess, 95 v 99 ron will be no more than 3 bhp if you are very lucky - and you won't notice that !

Premium fuel won't make much of a difference unless you have a tuned car with higher boost and more aggressive timing advance. On a standard car I agree with ronk in that it would be minimal as they have designed the engine map to accommodate standard 95RON fuel.

If you're worried about looking after the engine the best advice would be to give the car a good spanking regularly. Seems counter-intuitive but these engines suffer with intake port carbon build-up which due to direct fuel injection will happen regardless of fuel and additives. It can choke up the intake valves of a car in less than 30k miles in a car that spends it's time pottering around.

I'm never convinced by that argument because in the late 90s you were getting cars which ran fine on 95RON (& lower) but were giving 3-5bhp increases in power (200-250bhp engines) & holding onto that power for longer when >98RON fuel was used.

Whilst on the subject of bhp gains. Has anyone ever done that terraclean that ed China advertises. That supposed to rejuvenate the engine and give you back a few bhp. I thinks it's around £110 for a mobile service.

I suspect it's like the Kings magic suit of clothes !
No reasons, just a hunch.
