Just read today’s Mail which reports that as from next month petrol will change from having 5% bio ethanol to 10%. It’s a green thing apparently. Along with a possible increase in price the report expresses concerns that some engines may suffer long term damage especially classic cars. They say 98% of cars shouldn’t notice any difference but it may be actually cheaper to use premium fuel.

Any views from the experts on here especially re the 35is. Did try the higher octane fuel for a while but found the car didn’t run quite as smooth and my Indy recommended sticking with the lower octane.

This suggests it'll be fine. I only use premium E5 in mine though anyway.
 
This subject has been covered on the forum already but basically all BMW’s made since 1986 are ok for use with E10 fuel. Existing RON requirements must continue to be observed so if the vehicle should use RON 98 then use of this grade should be maintained.
 
Thanks Guys, The manual says min RON 95 which will have 10% bio ethanol next month. The higher premium fuel apparently will be remaining at 5%. Will try both and compare performance differences if any and of course cost.
 
Over the pond here in the states we have been using 10% for a few years. I have 3 cars that all need premium. I have been running my 05 zed for a year now since ownership on this fuel. I have seen no issues with the zed or my other cars. Just a FYI.

Your 35is has a black sticker inside the fuel filer cap cover that states clearly E10 fuel is ok and mandatory if you use 91 Ron (at least thats how I interpret it), if you are using 91 Ron you probably shouldnt be....

It's been 10% for a while around here, in standard petrol. The Super is still 5% at present. :)
 
The article said the official launch in the UK is Sept 1st and haven't noticed it around these parts although I must admit, I haven't looked but will sometime this week when I refuel.

From all the comments and from reading the links provided, will be sticking to 95RON and see how the E10 as and when it comes performs. If no different and the price remains the same will stick with that. If the price as predicted goes above premium, them may revert to that.

Ethanol is actually a good thing for cars assuming your seals n rubbers can cope..

It cools the charge allowing more power to be created if re-mapping or the existing DME takes it into account..

Latest cars have a bio sensor checking perversely for the absence of petrol rather than the existence of ethanol and adjust the fuelling maps dynamically..

You can retrofit a bio sensor so then you can fill up with lots of ethanol for really improved get up n go.. :thumbsup:

Not going to be relevant in the UK for a long time.. :tumbleweed:
