What is the purpose of the Alpine bit?

connects the iPod to the Intravee

I thought that was the whole purpose of the Intravee? So what does it do "without" the Alpine thingy?

The Intravee is a gateway device translating the iBus car network traffic to Alpine AiNet protocols. That allows you to connect compatible Alpine audio kit into the car. Most of us connect the Alpine KCA-420i iPod adapter.

The Intravee also has some neat tricks up its sleeve. It can add functionality to the car that would normally need the car to be coded (3 blink indicators etc), plus some things that can't be coded (speed dependent map zoom on the nav)

Brilliant bit of kit

Probably a useful bump - I am sure someone was looking for one of these a wee while ago...

Is it worthwhile then without a Nav? Obviously lose the integration on screen but can you still use it to code for guide me home lights etc swithout being able to use the Nav screen to operate it?

I have not had mine logout I'd say that without Nav it would be a complete PITA to use for more than iPod integration. If you even can. You'd be better off just sorting an aux port Tom...
