Front suspension rattly knocking noise over bumps

In relation to this topic all suspension parts renewed, unfortunately need a steering rack. Got play on the nearside.
Any ideas where to get steering rack from. Preferably new (not genuine). Any info much appreciated. Thanks

I have a similar knocking noice coming from the front end, seems more prevalent on the drivers side but could just be because i am closer to it. Knocking seems to happen most when going over uneven ground, like a wobbling noise, not so noticeable just going over a speed bump.

Have had new struts/springs, wishbones, wishbone bushes (Powerflex) and had all other bushings checked when work was done, none needed replacing but did upgrade the ARB ones anyway (Powerflex again).

My next thought was the engine mounts but i'm not sure how best to check them as all threads just seem to be for the Z4M, which assume can't be too dissimilar, will report back if i find anything in case it helps

Have you checked that the strut braces are really tight. Just a quarter turn is enough for them to knock.

I peeled the steering gaitor got hold of steering itself and its definitely got play in it. Compared to other side definitely feel the difference. I have renewed everything but.

[ref]enuff_zed[/ref], I will give it a go, do you mean the 3 bolts in the head or the bars that run to the centre by the windscreen?

I mean the diagonal bars with a nut at either end.

No the actual steering rack itself
Are you replying to my comments or making a different suggestion?
[ref]Phippy[/ref], my guidance relating to the engine bay struts still stands. Two minutes to tweak them.
If it doesn't work then address the other suggestions separately.

Wires crossed I think, but I know what you mean with engine bay struts, I put a small amount of paint on thread then on nut., just to see if nut moves over a period of time. Bit I think once tightened they are ok

[ref]enuff_zed[/ref], Gotcha! will give it a go in the morning and see if it makes a difference (i hope so as its the simplest option/fix!)

Will repost here for sake of good order, but update on the rattle/knocking, one of the bolts in the steering rack was slightly loose. found it by wobbling the wheel side to side while my indie had a look under the car (this was after giving the drop links a good shake but finding no play)

All sorted, I replaced everything including rack (which did have play in it) I found that I couldn't tighten everything properly whilst doing work with car on axle stands, got it on a two post lift and bolts were loose, main problem was the two bolts into chassis for lollipop bushes had worked loose.
I think if you replace things with quality parts and tighten down properly you should be ok.
Easy to check for wheel bearing play, it's a fairly simple set up really so as long as jobs are done properly and torqued down enough things should be ok.

Would start a new thread on this but can't find how to.!! 😃

From the main forum board, select the section you want to post in (E85 problems for eg)
