What kind of noise was it making? I ask because I have all kinds of noises. Even on a newly surfaced road, in neutral coasting, it makes noise. Apply brakes and I get different noises. I can't identify if it's wheel bearing, because turning in either direction the noise is the same.
Reminds me of a mk3 VW I had. Turned out all the wheel bearings were worn and control arm bushings on both sides.
