Front Spring Snapped

Hi all,

I had a real problem with my steering.....it worked fine, but made a grinding noise. Since I couldn't jack the car up at home I decided to take random photos underneath to see if I could spot any obvious mechanical damage. The steering looked fine..but I also took a photo of the front struts from the wheelarch. When I had a good look later I spotted this:

It does seem as if the spring has snapped on one side. Would turning the steering wheel from lock to lock whilst parked with a broken spring make a grinding noise?

Also..does anyone have a pallpark figure for how much replacement of the front spring(s) will cost?

Many thanks
Mark

That looks like the loose piece that snapped off, I would try to retrieve it in case if causes any damage rattling around in there.

Couple of hundred quid for Eibach springs all round (plus fitting on top, maybe same again) which a lot of people have done. Front BMW springs will probably be around the same, £400 all in - for a pair though.

Occasionally get people selling spare OEM springs on here... example is this thread:

£50 + P&P, but I imagine they have been snapped up (so to speak!)

Thanks guys,

I got a quote from my local dealer to supply and fit two new front springs.....£435 all in !
Down the road, Halfords workshop quoted me £314 all in.

I assume this type of job is within the capability of the Halfords workshop mechanics (formerly AA Nationwide)

I also need to get an MOT and road tax...so my bill to get it back on the road after being stored over winter is about £500

If anyone else has a spring problem I have a full set of OE springs (fronts and rears) from a low mileage (20k) 2006 3.0Si. which can be yours for a donation to the Forum. I will be in the UK over Easter but I must know before the 15th so I can bring them with me.
