Front spring replacements too wide?

Hey all,

Recently had my E89 snap a front spring and I am having an awful lot of trouble getting a replacement fitted!

I purchased a Lesjoefors 4008511 from GSF initially and when my trusted garage tried to fit it, it was too wide at the top to fit flush in the upper spring seat; old spring fit just fine across both the old upper spring seat and the new replacement one (am doing damper, top mount, bump stop etc. all at the same time as I'm in there) and, unsurprisingly, the garage aren't willing to fit it as they can't vouch for it's safety.

In hindsight I could have taken a better picture or two  but hopefully you can see what's happening (look at bottom left of image where the top of the spring is going over the upper seat)

They've since sourced their own due to the possibility that it could have been a case of wrong spring in the box, but have had the same issue with those too.

Is this a *thing*?

We're all utterly stumped as the right parts have been ordered, using the right part numbers. BMW have quoted something like £110 per spring and a week of lead time so I've asked them to hold off now. But I'm a bit stuck on what to do, my initial plan was to get a used spring from a breaker, but there's nowt on eBay unless I wanted the full damper assembly too!

Seems odd…for some reason real oem isn’t showing spring parts ?

I’ve used Suplex with no issues..

Yeah I would probably put it down to wrong spring in the box and it wouldn't be the first time its happened. I personally try to avoid GSF, ECP and CP4L when purchasing variant specific parts as they get them mixed up so often.

As B21 said, use the Suplex digital catalogue here (https://www.suplex.de/suplex-katalog/?lang=en) and find the Suplex PN for your Z4 variant. Then either phone Suplex direct (not sure if they still take orders this way) or search your PN like "Suplex 06231" on eBay, this is how I find my springs and have never gone wrong (yet!).

Hugely appreciate this, thank you - have ordered a pair of the seemingly correct ones from AutoDoc as it doesn't look like anywhere in the UK carries them. Hopefully it all goes according to plan!

I assume you’re replacing both front springs ?
Wasn't originally planning to as it was just the one that snapped and doing much more than the car absolutely needs is a bit of a luxury at present, but seeing as I couldn't buy a single one on it's own then I might as well get the whole lot done in one go to finish off the damping rebuild and take the hit 😅

Springs settle so never a good idea to replace just one on an axle..especially from a different manufacturer..appreciate the cost issue..

Thanks again for the help, especially the Suplex reference guide :D

Nice broken finger nail…was that as a result of said springs? :tumbleweed:
