Front passenger side caliper stuck

Out for a drive today and tyre pressure light came on. I drove to a mates and when i pulled up it was apparent the front passenger wheel had a problem as the heat coming off it was unbelievable. Took 10 minutes of cooling with a hose before we could touch it.

When we freed the wheel, we checked it, the wheel was freed and I drove home problem free. I've searched through the forum and found a few people have had this happen, is this a regular fault and what's the damage to fix, most people seem to be quoting 300 to 500 quid? My mate who is handy with the spanners reckoned it would be an hour to fix!

Seems odd that everyone it's happened to its on the same side and the same wheel...
 
Yeah, weird its always that side. Happened to me. Went to a BBK instead of spending money on rotors, pads and a refurb.
 
Don't know if it's the same problem but on the 330ci it happened. The internet thinks it can happen if you don't change your brake fluid. All the moisture that gets in (brake fluid likes water and collects it) corrodes the calipers from the inside.
 
The OEM single piston isn't protected from dirt ingress like on my BBK but perhaps more regular brake fluid changing might help.
 
Bit of a nightmare to be honest. Just had inspection 1 and then a brake service too. I suppose it's one of those things, I've got the lube ready for when I see my favourite mechanic. :o

Had the same problem with my caliper recently funnily enough mine was passenger side.i removed the wheel and then caliper there is a rubber seal that sits over the piston and it had a hole in it.On removing the piston there was a very slight build up of rust all was cleaned of using a scotchbrite pad.Replaced caliper bleed brakes and all has been fine whole job took 1.5 hours
 
I'm going to guess cooling a red hot rotor/caliper with a hose was a bad idea, make sure everything on that side is checked thoroughly.

Near side components suffer more than the offside due to the crap and puddles on the nearside of the road. Its as simple as that.
 
Yep had this a couple of months ago on my M. Passenger side caliper.

Apparently after inspection, mine was missing some sort of weather/cover part which let all the crud build up in it.

Due to it seizing, needed two new disks, new pads, new sensors and brake fluid change as it boiled as well as a caliper. About £1200 if I remember, but all under AUC warranty.

Agreed, I needed to get moving though. We were very sparing adding a little at a time. The only other time I've felt heat like it other than an open fire was standing next to a blast furnace. The car drove and broke fine afterwards.

Christ, if it costs that the Mrs will kill me. I hope that bill included the usual BMW inflation and M tax. :headbang:

I'll ask the question, could it be down to bad workmanship after the service? My mate thinks it could be but I don't want to accuse the guy...

The service was 3 months ago and I've done 2k miles since.
 
Not at all....

Its a seal thats degraded that is causing a problem....How on earth could he cause your caliper to seize up 3 months later?

I couldn't see how either but it was suggested to me. Looks like bad luck then. :thumbsdown:
