front number plates

It looks great but IMO not worth the hassle, when I first got my Z I got pulled all the time just to check my details and that it was my car etc etc. Small town they know the car and know me and I hate getting pulled by copers that have nothing better to do than pull young lads with nice cars.

Although never had a bad experience they are always really nice and are more interested in the car which I suppose is a compliment.
 
I had no front plate for 9 months last year.

Had 1 or 2 occasions at a petrol station, but my local one knows me anyway. Had security at work tell me it was missing and also had people tell me at the traffic lights. Bloody do-gooders

Passed a lot of police cars, never been pulled for it, looks much better without.

I wasn't worried about the fine, however I didn't have mine in the boot, I planned on looking really shocked and saying "officer, it was there when I left this morning!

Went to France in December which is why it's back on.
 
I've been fined twice and pulled 4 times.
First was for spacing had it "G4V PP" rest of the times were for my pressed metals which are legal but the police don't acknowledge it in the slightest. Nowhere does it specify what material the plate should be made out of. Aslong as its reflective, correctly spaced and all correct sizes and info they shouldn't be a problem but they still seem to fine for it
 
beetlegav, was the fine the same both times/? and did you get fined for the metal plates, when you say they were legal, did they have the bs number and everything correct, i would not have accepted a fixed penalty for a legal plate. :?
 
Mine lasted 15mins before a bike cop pulled a u turn and pulled me over. I was actually on my way to buy a new plate and had the old one in the boot. Newly fitted M bumper needed a new plate, not the scabby old one.

I got a producer only. Looked good for those 15mins though. :cool:

I rang up to speak to someone above him but I got a call back from the copper himself

He was a pedantic f**k. He said yes it has bs number on it but just because it has them doesn't make them right.
He said if I took if to court he would just pull that it doesn't have the post code on it.
Guy was a grade A knob! He just wanted me to have the fine.

He was adamant they weren't reflective aswel. Told him to go take a picture of my car with flash on to see if he could see it clearly. He didn't accept

Traffic cop on the m6 that was, Spooner his name was. Never a more accurate name
 
When I wash racing at Castle Combe last week I took the Mini down on a trailer on the back of the X5. In the heat on the first day the frontbnumber plate did actually fall off. The sticky pads weren't sticky enough to stick it back on so I headed home with it in the front window on the dash. I then got pulled on the M1 on the way home and was directed "follow me" lights in the back window of the squad car into Woodhall Services. I explained what had happened and got a right ticking off and was even threatened that my car would be seized if I proceeded on my journey without it in the correct place on the front of the car. He was a right arse but not clever enough to notice it was the incorrect plate (my transit van number) on the trailer. I had to gaffa tape it on to get home.
 
The law is quite simple relating to front reg plates on cars, you must have one. If one is not displayed then offence, now £100 not £60 but the good news is no points.

The reg plates on you car must be up to British Standards so must carry the BS number and the postcode of where they were made. If either of these are not on the plate then they are not reg plates so £100 fine (no points).
If any alterations are made to the plate, i.e.screws placed as to change the look of the letters or spacing being different from the normal, offence and £100 fine.
The police have the power to seize the reg plates off your vehicle as evidence so leaving you at the side of the road without plates meaning you can't drive the car as it has no reg plates!!

A little known point is that if you buy a private plate from the DVLA, you only buy the rights to use the plate and they can take it off you at any time. If the Police tell the DVLA they have issued a fixed penalty notice to you and you pay the fine or lose a court hearing the DVLA can and do take the plate off you, normally after three tickets.

Good news now is that most Police don't bother with this sort of ticket, it's normally just Traffic Police and you'll most likely only get one if you we're driving like an idiot. If you set off a speed camera and they manage to track you down, you may end up in court and they won't appreciate the lack of a reg plate, so expect a bigger fine.

Myself I can't see the point of not having one on the front of the car as it just seems too much of a risk for little better look.
 
Why not put a plate on, just asking to be pulled over. Much more likely to get prosecuted for something they might normally let slide ( ie slightly speeding) if they see no plate also.

Doesn't look any better in my opinion. Just get a nice personalised plate that means something. I got a personalised plate for my 18th birthday ( abbreviation of my name) and its always one of my fav things about my car.

You don't have the huge ugly plinth on your E89 though. I agree, personally I would keep the plate on for the reason you've given.

Not entirely true. All number plates don't need BS Mark and postcode. Only if you're having new ones. If the ones on your car don't have them because they were on before 2001 or the plate (private reg) was made before 2001 then they are legal.
 
My take on it is, why do it, no plate is blatently breaking the law, so why should it be any different for those who persistently remove it and then moan they get pulled over. I would say if your caught 3 times doing it then you have your car confiscated and crushed. Gets on my goat those people who stick two fingers up at the law all for the sake of a fashion fad. The law is there for a reason not for fun.

If you want some fun beat a pensioner up, it'll be a lesser fine and you won't get your number plate taken from you :evil:

It was more the hassle of being stopped at the eurotunnel, we were stopped anyway, me stark and jonnyfive all had our cars swabbed for drugs
 
Illegal not to have one on a car, it has to be mounted correctly so inside front windscreen doesn't count, in correct don't, the correct size and colour. Fine is up to £1000. You will also fail the MOT which might also mean your insurance is invalid as you would be running an unroadworthy car. See / google Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001.

Incidentally something I didn't know but just found out is that if you run illegal spacing or make your plate look like something it isn't with bolts etc then the dvla can withdraw the plate and you do not get any money back.....
 
My plate is meant to have a space which i removed... Also no BS mark.

And unfortunately they still found me when i got caught on a mobile camera :headbang:

Does this mean if I'd not had a front numberplate 2 years ago, I'd have not been caught by the front facing speed camera van on top of a bridge over the A23. 4 hours of a subsequent speed awareness course I could have added back to my life.
