Front hub issue during replacement

A snapped wheel bolt left me with no choice but to replace the front wheel bearing/hub assembly which I started today. Got the old one off easy enough and the replacement slid on with the help of a socket and hammer. However when I tighten up the nut to the specified torque (290) the entire hub assembly seizes up and doesn't move. I slackened off the nut to find at what point the hub tightens up and does move - it is exactly the moment after the nut is hand tight and you put a little bit of torque into the nut. Up until that point the hub spins freely as it should.

I'm at a loss as to what is going on; we've taken the new hub off and reseated it 4 or 5 times but had the same issue. I'm sure the hub is all the way onto the shaft. Has anyone had something similar during hub replacement?

We've tried everything to trouble shoot this; the only difference between the original hub that came off and the new part (Febi part 18769) is the inner bearing shroud sits 1-2mm higher and this is what the nut tightens up against. Looking online (autodoc) it seems we definitely ordered the right part and all the other options appear to have identical design where the inner bearing shroud sits proud of the bearing housing by a mil or so. It's just on the old hub, the shroud sits flush. I'm wondering if I should have ordered a kit that included a new nut, as I'm reusing the 46mm nut that was holding the old bearing on.

Appreciate any help.

You should always use a new nut really Para, 209 nm is a hefty torque setting, I don’t know if there would be enough thread stretch to lock up the bearing, but that would be my first port of call, eliminate the simple stuff first.

Problem solved and feeling like a bit of a fool; the old hub left behind it a small ring of thin metal on the spindle that was what was stopping the new hub from seating all the way in. Was almost impossible to tell it wasn't supposed to be there; but got it removed and now everything is good.

Totally agree with your point John; slight special circumstances right now as the car is in long-term storage as I live/work overseas for the last few years & foreseeable future. If I return to the UK and plan to put the car back on the road will be doing a thorough recommission including new nut for that hub.
