Front end respray..

Reading various posts around the forum, a lot of people seemed to have had the full front end repainted on there Z's..

Is the Z4 very susceptible to stone chips? I know mine has some on front bumper. Also seen 1,3&5 series of similar era have bad stone rash on front end..

Is it the water based paint??
 
Almost all Zeds will have had the bumper cover resprayed during their life. Some have bonnets and wings done, but that is actually rare aside accident damage. Bumper cover is of course prone due to how low it is and the shape making chips so visible.

All paints are water based now unless specifically restoring classics.
 
Dunno about the paint quality but had bonnet & bumper done on 07 520d (66k) before i purchased from dealer , , it was peppered with chips .
My Z bonnet / bumper is fairly chip free (90k with lots of motorway miles) but do want the bumper repainting to get rid of the kerb rash along the bottom edge :wink: inherited 8)
Usually get some tax back april/may so plan treating the car with that . . . although mrs w will want to spend it on 10days in majorca :cry:

Yea...

But the paint must be "softer" on modern vehicles..

My friends 1 series with 61k on is absolutley peppered on the front end,i have had 10-12 yr old E38,E39's that are pretty much immaculate with 100k+ on them..

I dunno,but modern paint material doesnt seem to last like pre 2000 cars..
 
My front bumper needs done, as does the bonnet if I am being picky. Also the skirts, right at the back next to the rear wheels where they flare a little. Like mr wilks, waiting on some spare cash to get it done...

The opposite is actually true. BMWs have particularly hard paint, which is by nature similarly brittle. Hence impacts tend to fracture the paint rather than distorting it.
 
Makes sense that.....

Something must have changed "in the mix" to make it that way...

Maybe i have more of a critical eye as i get older..?
 
For me, it's not to do with age... It is to do with the OCD brought on by this forum :cry: :headbang:
 
Ha ha...

Have been into detailing (albeit amateur) for around 6 years,but my brother used to be a car painter so he taught me the "eye"..

I often see things in paint that others cant spot,even when shown.. Its a nightmare!... :rofl:
 
Panting the front is a never ending story mines on the second and will pobably need a third , damn those stones !
 
Out of interest when did they stop using non water based paints? My 1995 compact has paint on it that is tough as nails compared to the Z4. I thought maybe they only gave it 1 coat to reduce weight :rofl:

The company I work for manufactures paint for industrial spraying, one of my distributors sell automotive paints, we don't manufacture those btw, They phased out solvent based paints quite a few years ago due to government legislation, however the low end user couldn't adjust to using WB systems, investment in plant essentially, so most continue to use SB systems.

With regard to performance resistance, hardness, durability, impact resistance etc WB systems will be just as good as SB, we manufacture both for other markets and they have to give the same resistance values in a given sector.
 
booked my bumper in for a respray next week, may have to resort to buying a wheel arch liner new, which adds to the cost (both have holes in from tyre rubbing) bit the bullet after catching a kerb. it was stone chipped badly already though.

place i'm going have already done a z4 just before christmas - £180 to remove bumper, paint, replace wheel arch liners and bumper, i didn't haggle at that.

OCD not quite but I had the bumper sprayed when I had it fitted but wasn't to happy with the colour match than I hit a kerb parking so decided to get it repainted and now it has some stone chips but I'll wait to paint it again probably when I sell it on . Which will be this coming year .
