Front daytime running lights

I have a 2009! E89 without the 2013 upgraded LED front ring style running lights. Can you upgrade by fitting an LED bulb in the pre-upgrade socket or is the whole unit re-designed?
 
You can fit led bulbs to the headlights to get rid of the yellow/orange original lights but just be warned that both circles of the lights will not be lit up exactly the same with the outers a bit dimmer.

Re-design. Can fit LED but won't look like the upgrade unit.
 
Has anybody managed to retrofit the new LCI headlights to the older models? Just wondering if it would be possible...

That’s an awful lot of money for IMHO diddly squat gain...

I would imagine it’s pretty trivial to do ...typically LCI type initiatives avoid doing anything to existing bodywork...
 
My 2009 had LED fitted when I purchased the car.

I did this and it worked fine..only issue is the led flanges are a bit thicker than the original halogen bulbs so its a bit of a tight fit...

Everyone bangs on about the uneven difference between the inners and outers but it gives it its character ..
