Front Bumper Help

Hi,

I joined the forum a couple days ago and was surprised how friendly and helpful every one is

I need a little bit of help with choosing a front bumper on my 04 BMW Z4. I have fallen out of love with my Alpina front splitter and looking for something different. I have seen a few members with the ZM bumpers on the front
would this fit my car? If not are there any other bumpers that would 'update' the front of the car a little. Back looks amazing but front looks a little dated.

I can do a lot of the work myself (within reason). Don't fancy plastic welding anything.

The z4m bumper goes on you need a new under tray. It's been done many times and should be an easy swap.

There is also the aero front bumper (BMW kit) or google and see other after market options. There is not a huge choice out there

I like your bumper but if you want a change I am sure a member hear will want yours.

Thanks for the input. I was surprised with the lack of options out there as well....although it could be because it looks so damn good standard.

I think it might have to be a M bumper

I swapped out my facelift front bumper for the M.
There are several threads here and there on how to do this.

The most difficult part of the exchange was locating the Z4M front bumper.
I got mine on Ebay.

Repairing the bumper

Next was removing the bumper.

The second most difficult part was locating one of the metal brake cooling duct supports.

I bought from BMW during a period when they were overhauling their inventory access software and many were faced with long delays.
Hopefully that's not a problem now.

I expect you already have experience with parts and labour shock BMW Style. Don't expect any parts price list to be in the ball park. Everything was way more expensive than I expected.

In the end - I couldn't be more pleased with the look of my M Bumper.

As a retired "Shop" Teacher ..
I look to you as the ultimate expression of hands on technical skills.
Be it a brick wall or a 2 into 4 exhaust mod...
You can do it all ...
And I expect somewhere over there, there is an old Industrial Arts Teacher that grins with me at your various adventures.

Now I come to the 'under tray"
Replacing the under tray just cause the stock one leaves a gap ?
Where is the fun in that ?
Shame on you Mr. Monkey !
I honestly expected more outta you !

I have commented on my initial experience.

In doing my conversion I had discovered some under tray damage (cracking) which I was unaware of,
and proceeded to repair it with JB Weld (a metallic epoxy - not sure if you have that product over there)
All that went well.
There was a small gap between the facelift under tray and the new Z4M Bumper.
I viewed that as a minor challenge and decided to use a flat part from my donour bumper
(something I pulled from the dumpster behind the Ford Dealership to provide bumper material)
And I fabricated a small extension out of that.

I was very pleased how everything played out
until my yearly oil change.
It appears that the Oil Tech at BMW had little sympathy for my mod and looks like he wasn't capable of tenderly revealing my oil drain.
Everything went well til then.

But I undauntedly persevered and reworked my previous solution into something I feel is superiour.
That's it til next year ...

Cheers

PS ...Just in case someone is motivated to look ..
I wonder just how expensive a new E85 Z4M Undertray actually is ?
Im afraid to look :tumbleweed:

Front bumper options are really poor :(

As the guys above have said the options are very few. Think your bumper looks pretty good thou

Should you go the ///M bumper route I can confirm you don't need to waste money on a new undertray. Simple piece of flat plastic can be cut to shape and fits the gap between old tray and new bumper.

Did mine with one that was supplied and was an easy conversion.

Really updates the front.

I am very sure a under tray section can be made. I was nearly informing that there is difference in the parts.
As you know I don't mind making the odd bit. Or completely home made exhaust or a DIY font bumper as we are on that topic. Just trying to be informative Mr Bumpy

And if the op is near Oxford I would be very happy to help  I actually gave a load of foamalux (ideal light weigh material) for the job in my workshop.

I except my d- on that post!!

Bumpy might have been referring to the fact his hockey pucks are half the thickness of OEM ones.

Take your hockey pucks off the car and to your work bench.
Mark the lens to assure alignment on reassembly
(I used a Sharpie Marker)
Layout a cut line around the circumference approx. half the thickness of the lens.
(I used masking tape and taped off the good part of the lens)
Make your cut.
(I used a fine toothed hack saw)

When parted ..True up the cut via a sheet of fine sandpaper taped to a flat surface
(I used 120 grit garnet, and the kitchen counter)

The waste lens is still attached to the white plastic base.
I made several relief cuts in the lens and snapped the waste with pliers.
Easy peasie cause the lens is brittle.

Re-align using previously placed Sharpie marks
(Pat your self on the back for being so smart in making those )
Don't forget a good quality epoxy adhesive as pride always comes before the fall. !

There yah go !
Mod well done !

Enjoy
