ive finally found the infernal rattle on my car ... unlike the garage who couldnt. its the dust cover. I wont be able to get one before the weekend when i go away are these integral to the brakes. i think not so was going to drag the damn thing off if i can and replace after i get back of holiday.

anyone any idea how... guessing its simply remove the brake disk and it will slip off?

dont tell me to replace you have to remove the hub or something :headbang: the rear was a sod and results in replacing bearings!!

Yeah, wheel bearings out for the front too.
one word... cock! :D
any instructions anywhere?
There are instructions around that show how to replace them without removing the hub.
It does require cutting part of the new shield to enable it to slide into place but its still secure once fitted.

just out of curiosity when do you hear this rattle?

My front shield rattles, and it rattles when going over the slightest of bumps! Getting annoying now.

Need to get the car booked in for an MOT (and handbrake adjustment prior!), and I'm gonna see if they sort out the shield without removing the hub and shield.

Any idea what to expect labour time for a hub and shield removal and replace?

I tried zip tying the shield, but this just resulted it tilting from top to bottom, with the bottom of the shield touching and scraping on the rotor, so quickly got rid of the zip tie!

Edit: £70 for a new shield alone :o

If it's anything like the shields on my e39, then you can take the bolt out from the offending area and add a large washer... That should see you through your holiday...

I'm sure you can get the shields are cheaper than that...

Also - try phoning Cotswolds BMW - they have always been very competitive for me and they post...

Yeah, I've heard about people using a washer to reinforce the rusted out part around the hole, just need to see how receptive my local indy are about doing something similar!

I'm sure they'd rather than the extra labour involved to replace the whole shield! Then I may as well put on a new bearing assembly while they're at it.

I did my front dust shield repair the other week, it takes about 20 mins, really easy provided it’s just corroded around the fixing points, just take out the bolts clean area and replace bolt with a large washer, 2p size should be more than enough.

Did you have to take the rotor off to get access to the bolts?

Cool, my indy said they managed to use some washers + silicone to sort it out, bit of a bodge but better than paying £60 for a new one, and then another £40 for replacing bearings and more on labour :)

Put some penny washers on my brake dust covers today (on my 120d)
