Right , I foolishly bought a 320d coupe in November last year with 51000 miles not thinking about the residuals & just rushed into it.

I have three issues with the car,

It's too high mileage to afford the AUC Next year

It's not fast enough,

i dont like the driving position

Every other thing I love (the gorgeous looks, the red leather, the wheels etc)

Do people think I'll be ok going for a 23Sdrive?

I love the looks of the e89, previously having an e86 and an e85
The driving position is far superior in the e89 too

i do approx 10k a year, do people think i'll be foolish going from something thats £104 a year to tax & that i'm currently doing 44.1 mpg in to something thats £250 a year to tax & that ill probably see around 30mpg?
Thoughts please

Your mileage is 10k a year so youll be fine with the 23i. I get about 27 mpg in the real world driving it fairly quick sometimes. The Z4 tends to hold its value better then a 3 coupe, mainly because theres about 20 times more 3 coupes than z4's.

Plus the 3 coupe's value will only go down, especially as more hit the used market with people buying the new 4 series.

Best advice I can give you is go drive one, with the roof down if possible, but take your wallet because youll love it.

I did similar a fews years ago & foolishly got a 520d touring because I wanted to save money on fuel after my previous 4.8 X5 but it was a big mistake & I absolutely hated the 4 pot diesel engine it was hopeless it had 177bhp but it felt like it had 50 bhp when you were driving it!

I would make the jump you are thinking about as I believe its worth paying a little extra on running costs for the overall pleasure of the more exciting car or engine...if you can afford it do it!

thanks for the advice guys.

i'm currently stuck between the 2.0 turbo & the 2.5 N/A as i love the sound of the straight 6 but i'm tempted by the economy & turbo pull of the 2.0?

Both engines have merits I think, a N/A engine is always smooth & free revving & its nice to have the silky nature of a 6 pot engine but the turbo of the 2.0 litre always make them feel strong in the mid range but you don't always get the top end benefit as much.

It just depends what driving characteristics you prefer & a turbo engine isn't always more fuel efficient either.

thanks for the help lee. im just wondering which will give me the least shock coming from the 320d in terms of MPG - i used to have a z4 coupe 3.0si & it blew my socks off in terms of noise & performance! However i'm not expecting that from the 23i or the 20i but i'm expecting it to be quicker than my current (184bhp) 320d?

I have always been impressed with the performance & economy of the 320d whenever I have had one as a loan car but for me personally I get more reward from a petrol engine emotionally for some reason so if there isn't much difference between the two in terms of performance I know the petrol would put a bigger smile on my face. :driving:

Last year I went from an e92 330d to the 20i and dont regret it.

Yes the z doesnt have quite the same shove ( Not much does ) but the 20i has enough ( I know all the 35i and 35is boys and girls will tell you otherwise ) in the real world. As you coming from the 320d you'll be fine on that front. - the 23i will probably feel a bit flat low down

I drive mine relatively sensibly on the commute to work with the occasional obligatory blast at the weekend with the roof down when the weather allows and I'm getting high 30s mpg.

The e92 was a great car and really practical for a coupe, but you cant beat the z as an open top for the suumer and a proper roof for the winter
