According to him only the software is updated.

Seemed to know what he's talking about but I'm no expert. What is the reason you ask, have you obvious FRM issues?
 
Yes. I disconnected the battery a few days ago, trying to reset my convertible top problem, and it destroyed my module. Had to drive the car 30 miles to the dealer with the trunk lid stuck in the up position and no trun signals.
 
Oh dear, have you enquired about the refurb anywhere?

Might be an easier replacement as it won't need coding to the car if I understand correctly.
 
I'm letting the dealer do it. I currently don't have the time to screw with the module and the roof. Need the car back on the road now. Don't want to screw with bypassing sensors to drive top into a position where I can test sensors. Later, when I have time, i go in and reprogram the FRM with the options I like.
 
Sounds expensive but if that's your quickest route back on the road I understand your frustration.

Whilst it may seem worthless I'd be asking for the FRM back as a spare at least.
 
There are known faults with the FRM module..the primary one is the checksum check on boot not working out causing the unit to brick itself…

Allegedly caused by faulty / ageing design and exacerbated by re-programming or battery changes..

Some say it s just a counter issue and when it reaches a certain number however it gets there..good night Vienna..

Relatively easy to get fixed by a suitable ECU overhaul facility
 
I got my E90 3 Series from Ross at RBM today and one of the problems he sorted was the wiring for the lights on the bootlid.

He said because I had just kept using the car with the failed light warning the FRM module for the reversing lights had burnt out, but rather than replace it he got it repaired - I suppose it could have been worse!
 
A big issue here is not to leave the key in the ignition when you remove the battery!! It gives a surge when reconnected and thus can blow the FRM.
But this is no guarantee that it wont do it anyway, but a very good practice to get in to. :thumbsup:
