Freeing up luggage cover

The luggage cover on my M coupe seems a bit stiff, to the point that the boot lid is slow to open when its attached. It does feel stiff to pull out by hand, so its definitely the cover retraction mechanism that's stiff rather than the gas struts that lift the tailgate.

Any advice on what i can lubricate and what with to ease it's action?
 
I'm not clear what is actually causing the friction, ie the fabric or the mechanism itself.

Let me know how you get on with the furniture polish.
