FPV Drone racing

Hi all,

I've been reading up on FPV drone racing and it looks pretty awesome to be fair. I was just looking at a Storm SRD180 and although it seems quite a lot of money, it looks like hours of fun.

I just wandered if anyone on here is into their drones and/or does drone racing? Apparently there are clubs around the country that hold race events on outdoor and indoor tracks.

I can see this becoming some sort of sporting event in the future.

I bought myself a £50 drone with an inbuilt camera a few weeks ago. It took me less than 20 minutes to loose it over the neighbours garden 3 or 4 houses down, never to be seen again...

I think I'll stick to RC cars #midnightpumpkin

the modern day version of 'can I have my ball back please...
 
lol, these racing drones look to be a bit more complex with GPS receivers and sound buzzers if they do get lost. The tech in the more expensive versions also means they are more stable, powerful and have a huge range so shouldn't drop out of the sky if you get out of range.

i've flown R/C helicopters etc but once you've flown it around a bit you feel you've kind of done that, what now. The idea of racing drones seems like fun as there is a purpose to having it. more to ponder me thinks.
 
Well it's taken me a while but I now have this little beauty up and running. Similar quad with same setup just recorded 147kph through a speed trap.

It's great fun and cheap to fix when it inevitably crashes. They are also incredibly tough. Yesterday I binned it into a field at about 40mph and and just broke a prop.

Looking for a cheeky xmas gift, these look awesome and was into rc cars as a kid.

Is yours a custom built kit or off the shelf? What goggles are you using?
 
It's custom built but you can by them off of the shelf.

Goggles are the bottom end of the fatshark range but ideally I should have got the more expensive HD ones. Although expensive it's worth it. They don't exactly give you an HD image as that's from the camera but the actual screen size is much better.

Never transitioned to flying rc things as they released the electric helis back then when i was into electric cars, the cost of the 4 channel rc controllers were the full costs of the car kits.

The goggle setup is what is making this time round more appealing.

Have you attended any race meets to date?
 
This setup came to about £350 but you can pay that for just goggles. I bought second hand goggles for a start as didn't know I'd like it. Deffos like it.

Not attended any race meets yet as honing my skills still. Have flown with a few people freestyle though. Great fun. A local airfield to me have set up a permanent race track so I'll give that a go once I've got a little better.
