its part of a coil spring!
In that case, it probably been sitting, broken for a year before it fell off, and as you haven't noticed any change in handling it probably means it'll drive as it always did :P

Personally I wouldn't drive it, but I guess you've got to get it to a garage somehow!

hang on, Is it dangerous driving the car like this? :?

assuming it came from your Z and it indeed looks like a piece of a rear coil spring ,I would say a broken rear spring renders rather unroadworthy
If you do drive it I would make it to the Dealer cautiously

I had a broken spring when I bought my Z,I didn't know until 4 months later when it went on for some tyres and the garage found it. It drove ok TBH,but much better when I fitted new ones. I'd happily drive it to a garage for new springs.

You'll be fine driving it. I covered around 800miles in my Z4 aqfter collecting it and discovering during a pre-purchase inspection that both rear springs were snapped. I'd bought replacement springs immediately upon getting home from picking it up, but used the car for a few trips before being able to switch them over.

where did you get your replacement springs from? straight from BMW or is there a place like GSF that do them?

As above many have had this problem and not noticed for months. My dealer found one of mine broken. I didn't notice any difference and I'm not sure how long it had been broken, both I and the dealer had the wheels off 2 weeks before but we could have both missed it or it may have happend of the forum run the day before I took it in for an unrelated issue.

I did a 1000 mile round trip to cornwall with a broken rear spring. I didnt find out until i had my rear tyres changed and it made no difference once changed. If it had snapped in the middle i'd be more worried.

well what the hell is now sitting in the top/base of the damper in its place?

what is left of the coil ?

I would get it looked at
On the down side were you to have an accident if the police found a broken spring it might affect their assumptions :(

It's a common prob an set to get BMW or a local indi to sort. If u have any warranty it will be covered!

Have a look at this..... and add yourself to the list:
