So stuck in traffic and discovered a new unknown feature to me

- broad daylight so auto light were off
- stick the wipers on and after 5 full wipes the light switch on
- turn wipers off and lights go off after a couple of seconds

Anyone else notice this?

Is that just because the wipers are sweeping over the sensor triggering the lights?

My auto lights have a mind of their own... If the sun is behind me and i am travelling at speed the lights always come on!

Dont know for sure - but educated guess would suggest that if the wipers are going ten to the dozen the wipers need to come on in case you have limited visability - so a safety precaution.

I noticed that on a rental Chrysler I got in the states, turning the wipers on would turn the lights on after a short period of time, the lights would go back off once I turned the wipers off.

Yeah, my 330d does this, wipers come on then lights, must be the same in the Z but rarely drive it in the rain :-)

clever old BMW...

Pretty std with both auto lights and wipers. My current daily VW CC does it as does the Zed and wife's Audi TT. My previous daily (Mercedes) also did this and the one before that and the one before that too. The wife's previous was a 1 series and that did it as well.

I would say it was the norm from my experiences.
