Forums better than Facebook?

I was reading the other day about Facebook and that its audience was spending shorter time periods on line with it now.

I have a Facebook account and post almost nothing on it, but check in to see whats happening most days. For me Its a useful social tool, i can spark up a chat with colleagues about their holiday or see what an old friend is doing without having to call him up. If your not on it your often in the dark about peoples business, and i find social connectivity in work is a powerful tool.

*So it seems like a lot of people, i use it, but critcally dont really participate in it*

In terms of 'online enjoyment' I much prefer forums. Just the uncluttered abilty to read conversation.

The larger more general forums are difficult as there are a lot of people on them and a lot of space gets dedicated to idiots. And then obviously the idiots being told where to go. Similarly with the comments section of any national newspaper.
But, the smaller forums that i am a member of are so much more interactive than facebook or similar (for me). Topics running pages and pages of well articulated material thats a genuine enjoyment to read and participate in.

Does anonymity provoke more people to talk?? After all i like to keep myself very low key on facebook as it involves the people actually in my life.

I know some of you have met each other, as i have met some other members but do you think forums are a better read simply for the fact people rarely have a real social life with many of the other members?

When (not if) something replaces the giant Facebook what will it be? Something like a forum?
Tell me so i can make loads of money :D That tumblr fella seemed to have sold at quite a nice price reading the news today :o :o

I totally agree with you there.

My facebook posts are limited to Flickr posting on my behalf and thats it.

In some ways though, Facebook is a forum of sorts, allows people to post (becomes the topic thread) and others are then able to comment on such.

Though personally I use facebook for checking out car stuff. Everyone that I care to keep in contact by I can call/text etc.

As for social media, I'm more fond of Twitter.

I used to use Facebook much more than I do now and when I do use it it's to keep in touch with friends and family I don't see often because they live abroad/far away.
It's a great tool for that reason alone. For instance the majority of my old school friends keep in touch that way and we organise get togethers etc.
What I don't like about it is the impact it has on kids (and some 'adults'), the trouble it causes, the way they fall out over who posted what, who blocked who, who excluded them from a 'chat'. Mr M won't have anything to do with it for that reason.
I'm only a member on a few forums and they are mainly car ones but this is the one I use predominantly. It's by far the best one I've ever been a member of.
I much prefer coming on the forum to using FB. With the forum there's a mine of information available and there's the social aspect too, there's some great people on here who are like minded, great sense of humour and usually within minutes of posting a question, you've got an answer.
I'm not sure a forum style development will take over from FB, I think it would have done by now but something will eventually.

I just dont agree with FB - IMHO it creates more issues that problems it solves.

i much prefer twitter then FB.

My FB is now limited to me showing off my holiday pictures

See i havent experienced any of the negative sides to FB. Maybe my set of friends are too well behaved??!

I read about all the problems it causes and my girlfriend certainly has people on her feed ranting like a jeremy kyle show but ive never witnessed any first hand.

Machine monkey - i know, i remember when i bought my first Z4, i was never gonna do any mods to it

So coming back to my first point, does the anonymity even to a degree and a seperation from real life make for a better platform?

for personal use i barely use facebook, think i have uploaded 3 pictures in about 4 years

but i use a private business group ( lots of guys from same industry as myself ) and we post quite alot on it, exchange jobs openly and post pictures of our work

I'm using Facebook more now than previously, but I don't use all that much.

The forum provides topics to discuss etc which can be more involving that the usual crap posted on Facebook.

I used to use the forum a lot more, but there's a limit on how many time you can answer "what's a stubby"

I am not on Facebook but I probably spend to much time on forums anyway, so I will continue to enjoy forums instead.

Totally agree, my Facebook has turned into a nursery. Even more annoying when the profile pics of friends turn info their babies.

I do use FB to stay in touch with family and friends who are spread far and wide. For socialising I am part of the twitterati. I like specific forums as everyone other has something in common.

ZSCCA has a Facebook Group which is pretty active and it is moderated and there is a good bit of useful information posted. However, the biggest problem is 6 months later going back and trying to find that information or post.
