Forum User Names

Carol M

Lifer
I've noticed that at times people refer to users by their real names in posts on here.
Obviously such as my user name and others who have used their 'real' names, that's ok but for people who have chosen user names that don't give away what their real name is they may have done so because they don't want their real names out there in web land.
I have on occasion referred to someone by their real name without thinking but make a conscious effort not to do it now.
Any thoughts on this and if people mind having their real names mentioned?

No conscious effort, my username is the first part of my email and my surname (Marchant). My first name is Andy.

Mines not difficult, and I don't mind either :) however, I also don't tend to use people's first names unless they are clearly identified in their user name, even if I know them.

Tapatalking...

I try hard to keep mine a secret and would appreciate if others did the same! Thanks for asking Carol

Oh, hang on a sec... :?

Mines no secret, I struggle with names so never fear revealing someone's true identity.

This is the first and only forum I've been on, when asked for my user name I thought it meant users name

I would have been Red7 otherwise :D

Tell you what is weird, is when you use a stupid name on a forum and then you finally meet another member face to the face for the first time and they feel compelled to say "hi there, captain_panty_hands_69!" in front of your friends and family.

Its Ok as long as you dont actually say ' LOL'

Can't see the problem.

Now if it was the full name then it becomes searchable in Google and the like, which is why I'm sure a lot of us adopt forum names.

I think forum names are all well and good but I get confused at Meets as to who is who and what forum contact I may have had with them. Most people introduce with their usual first names. I then end up still calling them by their forum name. At the National Meet it was funny last year hearing people being referred to by forum names with numbers in. Everyone seems to know who I am strangely.

Machine monkey is my real name. No it's not only kidding that would be radiculas it's Mathew yes with only 1 t to my friends Mat so you can all call me Mat.

I'm crap at remembering names, so on the rare occasion I have the opportunity to mention someone's real name.... I do

My name is Bob by the way :? 8)

While I'm mostly not worried about a real name. I just found it easier while registering on multiple sites. Such as shopping sites in addition to the 4 forums I belong to. As my real name is Jerry. It's fairly common name in the states. So I'd rather not be a Jerry followed by multitudes of numbers and symbols. I've been able to get by with only two variations of bigdog. Which was the name of a company I once owned.
