Forum trip to Germany 2012?

Admire you enthusiasm, but not really do-able in a day, even an overnighter would be a right slog. Not all autobahns have no speed limits and those that do only have sections of no speed limit. As for the Nurburgring, 2 overnight stops would make more sense, a day getting there, a day there and a day getting back, plus track closures are frequent in the winter months as the frost/ice never thaws.
The route we took to the Harz last year (you did not show up on that trip 
) was over the north of Germany, via The Netherlands.
On that route, the majority is speed limit free so very nice and we could do very large sections of flat out. You need 4 days really though to enjoy it as otherwise it is just a mad rush.

Not really bothered about the Nurburgring myself, but the autobahns do appeal. Could you not do a decent trip if you left say 6am on a Saturday, stayed over 1 night, then came home Sunday evening?
Most organised trips on here seem to be summer time which I find very difficult to get time off for. Late winter/Early Spring is much the best for me.

You can certainly do Nurburgring with a 1 night stop over from SE England. We did Spa this summer from Cornwall, with a one night stop. No problem. Left the track at 4pm and was tucked up at home before midnight. Might not get much track time that time of year or might get lucky, you never know with that place. If you want to go Autobaun running then I would plan two nights and get up real early and drive down to northern Switzerland and back. It's a long way and the petrol will be your bigest expense by far, but if you enjoy driving all day long, like I do, then it's a great little trip.
