Yes it was. Bearing in mind the OP said he had tried and could not find what he was looking for I just felt we, as members, were being less than helpful.
I guess it's just me but if someone has taken the trouble to post a question I would always try and help rather than, basically say, 'look for it yourself you arse''
But hey, what do i know.

The best things about this forum is the fact that people are helpful, sympathetic , positive, friendly and polite. Even as a newbie i was never made to feel stupid for asking questions and always got a timely answer or kindly remark to any posts i put up...this encouraged me to continue posting and hopefully add to the z4 community. If i had just got replies like "use the search function" i wouldnt still be here!!!

I have used the search on a number of occasions and to be honest i have found what i was looking for every time, i am actually surprised how easy its been to find the answers.
Now compared with other forums i find this one to be very friendly, yes , receiving the " use the search" as i did on one occasion appear a little off- putting, you soon realise how good the search is and understand why the remark is used in the first place.
I think on the whole everyone behaves in a most respectful way so lets not get to over- sensitive, can you imagine what it would be like, all these people sitting in a pub discussing the emotive subject of ///M badges appearing on a 3.0si coupe? its only human that the discussion will become heated and i cant see why it would be any different on here, does not mean people are being rude.
NOW if anyone said my dog is an hairdressers dog :x

when I've said "do a search" I always put a :wink: at the end.

To me that's being friendly, after all there could be many threads that relate to the subject but only one has the answer the OP needs.

I think it's a no win situation if you always post a thread as a reply some people will never try and search themselves.

On heated discussions, I find that anything you post on the internet or send in an email has to be both written and read with care as you're right, they happen and these are not great mediums for expressing emotion... In fact sometimes I think email is one of the greatest evils on the planet. Though I love the smilies on here as they help a huge amount - wish I could use them at work sometimes :roll:

Well it's definitely served as a useful reminder to everyone to i) try to use the search facility; and ii) if you do know the thread and can find it again easily enough, then yep post the link up.

As a 'newbie' to the forum (but not forums in general), first impressions do count. A polite "did you try using the search facility" or "try this link" works far better than an abrupt "use the search" - just in any walk of life, gentle coaching brings dividends, abrupt direction breeds discontent.

As my (and I'm sure, other) mothers say, "if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything"

Totally agree, if possible the link should be posted, we are a community, obviously the op couldn't find what he was looking for, also srhutch made a great point if " do a search " is posted a smilie should be used, :wink: otherwise it comes across as rude and aggressive.

Ok hands up how many of us have made friendships on here with over members from maybe a help needed started question , yep your hands up now isn't it.... I know i have.

Thats whats great about this forum people will actively go out there way to help others... and i think lets keep it that way

Looks like ive done it 50 odd times

The other issue is I spend so much time on here I know nearly every nook and cranny,s o know the information is on here but just a little to lazy to go and find myself.

The problem is there are so many topics that are repeated and you can search through many threads to think you may find the answer, only to have a 'use the search' answer, If that answer had been in those threads as well, (which I will put if I know it) then it makes the search quicker.

for example: above I didn't know to use the + sign. and in six months time if i forget what i had to do and searched for this thread where it tells me to use the + sign, then I would have to remember to look for a thread entitled 'Forum Etiquette' to find the answer,

What is wrong with giving a short answer?
In fact I searched for the thread I mentioned earlier about the roof, and guess what , I can't find it, even searching my own posts.


I see a lot of these posts on here, and a lot of them are from high post members, the guys with the most experience to share...I suppose it boosts their count....

Sorry gookah but that is complete bollocks.

The phrase which SRH mentions above ie. "do a search" appears in 419 posts from 461,191 so just about one in a thousand posts.

The word "search" appears 4645 times but most of these times it is not in the same context. So maybe one in three or four hundred posts is telling people to use the search function. Not a lot really.
