Forgot to add washer to sump bolt

Decided to do an oil change in a bit of a rush. Upon removing the bolt I couldn't find a washer. I assumed this bolt had been replaced at some point and was a type that didn't require a washer. It appeared to have one moulded into the bolt.
So in my infinite wisdom, decided to leave the new washer off. Once I had finished I moved the car and found the old washer on the floor :headbang: :headbang:

Question - will I be ok without the washer? Or I must drain oil and replace with new washer?
Google says check it in a couple of days and provided there is no leak, I should be OK.

Just want to get opinion of the experts.

TIA

They didn't all have a washer, some have a silicon ring and the bolt is single use. Depends on the engine, i think only 2.0 had a washer.

Thanks Rock!

Mine is a 2003 2.5i

Does that mean I don't need the washer? There definitely wasn't a silicone ring on the bolt.

I've nearly been caught out by the bit below the head of the bolt that looks like a washer. So yes, you really do need a washer in there.
How about getting a complete new sump bolt with washer, waiting until the oil is cold and therefore a little bit lessy runny, then doing a very quick, old one out, new one in, sticking your finger in the hole in between. It won't be without a bit of mess but you should onlly have to top up a little bit.

Ah yes, didn't see the post about which engine it is, upon further checking its the N52 uses the silicone ring.

I knew there was a couple of different plugs in use. I've never actually had mine out, i pump the oil out through the dipstick tube.

Thanks gents!

I will rope in the Mrs and have her place the washer onto the bolt while I plug the hole with my finger.

@enuff_zed- I assume there would be any issue using the existing bolt? Would like to get it done tomorrow. I just won't be able to rest otherwise :headbang:

I've seen videos of engines running and the suction/vacuum being enough to keep the oil in place without any drips (I think I saw it for an oil level sensor being replaced).

It could be worth looking into?

Edit - like this... https://youtube.com/shorts/Vg_JbQNnJWQ

No idea if it will work, but something to investigate potentially.

I'm definitely not brave enough to try anything like that.

Think I'll just risk the mess tbh :driving:

That’ll work. Cold though or when your better half inevitably drops the bolt your finger will be gently frying!!

I have the 2.5 N52 and it has a copper single use washer.
