The new ford focus st looks to be a good alternative hatch car... but someone in the styling department has roots in bmw styling, check the cheeky hofmeister kick ... not sure how that got signed off

BMW don’t own that design feature, they are just the most prominent/consistent user of it.

It’s been used on Alfas, Lancias, Chevrolets, Fords & Vauxhalls in the past.

Lots and lots of cars have similar designs, accents and profiles. It seems to be the way. I can also imagine that car design may well be like using images for other products and as long as there is at least a X% difference in overall design, a manufacturer cannot come after the person using that ‘design’

And let’s be serious the 1st gen 1 series looked quite a lot like the Alfa 147 from the side, especially in red!

Never noticed it on any car let alone a BMW. Now I'm doomed to see it every where.

Education is a wonderful thing.

I guess because it been a design element is most bmws for the last few decades, but agree its not a design patent as such but hasnt been used much by other makers.
Its only interesting as the recent design leads had been doing musical chairs accross the industry. So its interesting to see how elements appear in different brands.

Its kind of like how ford grills resemble the old aston grills, and interesting how audi and hyundia have a similarish hexagon/octogon gaping grill...

Yes the Callum influence at Ford is very noticeable and a very good thing to.

Easier to see on the 3 door...

...than the 5 door:

Is it just me, or do those Alfas look like the front wheels are only just in front of the doors? With a lot of car sticking out in front of the wheels?

One of the things I liked about my 1 Series was that it seemed to have a wheel in each corner.

Not quite the best angle to see it, but hopefully there is a difference.

I never knew what the "Hofmeister Kink" was until this thread; I always thought it was something a bit more dramatic!

Either way, did we just find another reason why coupes are better? :poke:

BMW make a thing about sticking wheels in the corners, balance etc. most other manufacturers don’t. That focus has about 2 foot in front of the wheels also.

On a day like this it’s hard to argue with you. PERFECT weather for topless motoring.

Not any more they don't.... centre line of the front wheel to the furthest point of the front bumper on the G29 is 904mm - which is 3 feet as near as...

That's the new ST line. The ST isn't out yet  basically it's the version people buy when they want to pretend they have an ST
