Ford Mustang

Not been in one but seen loads about at the Severn Tolls. They seem quite common already !

Hello Carol

we were talking this on this thread ... http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=83805

I am test driving one within the next couple of weeks purely out of curiosity, plus I have a local Ford dealer (Dunton Essex ) A chap called Richard Bradey ( he was in auto express recently ) who has arranged this for me.

If it happens I will let you know how I get on ...

Anyone had a go in one of the new ones? Either the V8 or 2.3 turbo?
I'm a bit taken by them.
Yes, I had the 2.3 turbo as a rental in CA last year... good point... - comfortable, seems very well made for a yank, well equipped, looks good. Downsides - everything else, it drove like sh*t, went like sh*t, drank fuel. What a crock. Engine was awful, the V8 must be better but this was truly awful.

For me a 4pot engine in a mustang would only ever lead to awfulness to be fair, I think a Mustang should always have a V8 because that is the whole point of having one. :driving:

I really want to shoot the guy who thought a 4 pot engine in a mustang was a good idea :headbang: for the UK market(maybe I can understand it though with high fuel prices) but in the USA that really just isn't acceptable at all :o

It did 33mpg US which was far better than I imagined it would be, but the payback was the whole driving experience. The quoted performance figures for the 2.3 are surprisingly good but didn't feel like it in reality. So a mixed bag.

If I was shopping for one I'd want to try the V8 before committing but for me, the 2.3 is a non starter.

It's funny that the 4 pot is exactly the same unit as the new Focus RS, just less powerful and vocally muted. Overall the V8 is what you buy a mustang for unless you do crazy miles.

The one to go for though is the GT350, but not available on our shores :(

Just listen, oh what a sound

I see that Clarkson reviews the 5.0 V8 GT Auto in this weeks Sunday times driving section in the magazine. It might be available to view on driving.co.uk.
The fuel economy on this test is given as 23.5mpg still not as good as your M3 I suspect.

had a quick blurt in one a few weeks back, i'm torn. I think the biggest problem is that the previous gen mustang was, to be blunt, crap. Cheap as chips, hollow plastics, and a cheap way to get into a car and have the 'I have a v8' wank factor followed by 'it's not supposed to handle well/be built well, it's a muscle car'; so feels like the new one gets a much better write up than it deserves in isolation, even though they are really well polished compared to the old ones.

It went well, would like the v8 to sound more v8-ish (but a new zorst or induction would sort that) it leaned a fair bit if you turn with any gusto, bit of centre play, sound system was great, the extreme popularity and residuals will put me off a bit.

But I guess you have to remember it's a $50k car, being that's the price of a low-mid range 3 series here, that's something to behold. But that's the thing I kept thinking 'it's a great car... for the money' rather than simply 'it's a great car'. Still, can't help but thinking that with some choice mods, more compliant suspension, throaty exhaust they could be stunning. They're selling like hot cakes just for being a mustang here, so none of that matters, it's a v8 coupe so what's not to love

if / when a Shelby incarnation reaches over here, I'd be very, very tempted.

I can see you in one of these Carol.

I had a mooch round one a couple of weeks ago and came away feeling a bit cold. I liked the idea but the reality is that you are not Steve McQueen charging through the streets of 1960s San Fransisco in a highland green 1968 GTs. You are a retail manager* from middle England** tiptoeing a massive plastic American barge with such horrible features as aluminium EFFECT plastics through greasy country lanes. The reality doesn't live up to the romance.

A V8 is always pleasant but new Mustang money will get you a decent M3, C63, RS4, V8 R8 etc which are all better to drive.

Appreciate the German alternatives will all drive better but German motors lack soul and that is one of the big pulls for me with the V8 Mustang, it has character and a strong likeability about it...I am a big Ford fan boy though so maybe I am too blinkered! :D

I had a V8 M3 and it left me flat but I would like to imagine that the Mustang would put a far bigger smile on my face than the M3 ever could. :driving:

I get what you mean, The flawed cars are often the ones we look back and remember as being our favourites and the Germans can often be too clinical. They do make the odd fun car though. Not owned any of the above but drove most of them and I felt similarly about the M3. However, the C63 is a loon ball and the V8 R8 is surprisingly good, id pick one over a V10 (B8 RS4 is crap though, hated it, i preferred the supercharged S4).

Ford official mpg average is 19 point something for the V8. Worse than my M3.

My Mazda rx8 used to average 18mpg driving to work sensibly :headbang:
Rob

The reason I don't have one as a daily. ( Well that and the reliability stories)
