Forcing caliper pistons back

I've just bought some new pads for my 2006 Z4M Roadster. Will I need a brake piston wind back tool to force the piston's back or will another method suffice?

If the calipers are in good nick (reasonably free) try using some snipe nosed pliers putting the points of the pliers into the detents for the tool on the piston. You have to push the piston in whilst turning btw.
Its a bit tricky but usually works.
The tools are not that expensive however > £20
 
Make sure that you remove the Brake Fluid Filler Cap to release the back pressure ( and it doesn't then overflow).

If removing the calliper from the hub by removing the two 16mm bolts at the back and letting it hang on the hose, I found a small G clamp worked easily . :thumbsup:
 
AFAIK BMW's do not have wind back caliper pistons.

You can therefore push the piston back in with a clamp.

Put a block of wood or brake pad on the piston face so it is pushed back in as evenly as possible. If you load one side too much, you can damage the seal and then you will need a new caliper.

+1 - real bad habit to get into.

Tie wraps or 'S' of bent of wire from the likes of a coathanger

When I say 'hang' I meant retained purely by the hose. Not exactly left dangling... :oops:
But otherwise free whilst you apply the G Clamp :wink:
 
i normally just leave the old brakes in the caliper then then just use a bar to force the calipers back
