Still an avid fan f manual boxes, but haven driven a Macan with a fleppy paddle auto, and foundmit great in town/country roads(previously only ever used them in track day cars,eg lmbos,Ferraris etc).....but can see why car makers are going to them, faster changes etc,but hope manuals don't disappear too soon.

I always disliked auto as an 'old mans' car but went for it on my latest zed. No regrets, smooth, responsive. I wouldn't go back to manual now. Even my wife is a convert!

Well, porsches 911r prices skyrocketed, so apparently there is always a market for a purist' car. First phase out the manual box, then launch 'special editions' for insane pricetags

I guess I go for manual because its what I'm used to, also I get confused by all the Auto options available - SMG, tiptronic, semi-automatic, paddle shift? Talking to DLH regarding his Auto E89 - the paddle shift do sound like fun :driving:

M6 I can just about understand as its a GT tourer but to take it away from the M5 is really disappointing however will help residuals of other/older models.

I've been contemplating the Auto box in the M135i but still undecided as driven manual cars all my driving life. Main advantage would be overcoming the slightly offset pedals in the 1 Series manual, not by much but enough to give a skewed driving position. Also unsure of the Auto box's long term reliability.

Great video here comparing manual Vs auto, always like this guys video blogs.

All I can say is I hope the manual boxes don't completely disappear as all its doing is taking away driver choice.

I had an E89 8 speed auto for a week and was bored after a couple days and actually looked forward to getting my 320d Manual back. I don't get why there's 8 gears either and it did some really weird delayed revving when you floored it in full auto mode.

I was pleased that the M4 was offered with a manual because I didn't really expect it because the DCT was so popular with the previous model and hardly anyone went for the manual in the end.

It's good that the M2 is offered as a manual too but the manual will die eventually I think in performance cars...you will always be able to get non performance cars with a manual for a long time though I reckon because the manual still easily outsells autos in non performance stuff.

Yeah,me and the wife are looking at new cars, and when you get to performance models,eg q3/5 tfsi petrol,in 200+bhp,and PORSCHE Macan, jag fpace,z4 35is,etc etc,you can no longer have a manual. Shame, but I do understand why, given better efficiency, quicker shifts etc.....but still love manuals :driving:

I have an auto only licence, but have driven a couple of manual cars through an auto clutch system. Yeah, it was fun, but now I am an old fart I like the auto box. It also works better with the active cruise control.

Folk who have driven the auto's prefer them for ease of use, especially round towns.

An old pal of mine had a TVR Tuscan with manual box - he was a T4 paraplegic. - the car was adapted with a proximity switch on the gear knob which triggered the vacuum system to pull the clutch pedal down. Select a gear, Throttle up and the vacuum goes and the clutch bites!

Repeat several times ! :driving:

Still can't make sense of BMW offering a manual M5 in the US (the home of the slushmatic) but not offering a manual in the UK?!

But then I am getting on a bit!

Based on previous experience of autos (1978 Granada Ghia, 1985 Scorpio, 1981 W123 280e and 1994 C280 "Sport") I won't have another - well at least until I can't manage 3 pedals and descend into Micra/Golf Plus territory!

Surely a Z4 has to be manual?! It isn't a car designed for "around towns", it is for hooliganary!

I used to say I would never have a auto/semi auto what ever you want to call it. But know after having a auto 335d,640d & now 35is I just can't see passed them. Granted the dct in the 35is is in a different league compared to the other 2 but still great gearboxes & a pleasure to drive. See lots of people say this & that I'll never have a auto there rubbish, but they've never had one lol I've had 3/4 mates change there mind after driving my 35is. 1 sold his Porsche 911 manual & bought m235 dct & says it's the best thing he's ever done. He was the one saying auto is crap  a other just sold Cayman 3.4s manual for pdk Cayman gts & also best thing he's ever done. Think it's just progression & the money spent on tech now.

I am still the other side of the coin though and I have owned the ZF8/ZF6 Auto and a DCT in a TTS, also driven a DCT in a M3 and yet I still prefer the traditional manual by far.

I just think you either like one or the other and I just can't see past a manual and find anything else unrewarding and boring to drive, yet the Auto/DCT fans love those as much as I love a manual, it's just personal preference I think.
