For the love of Chocolate

Well it's been I very very long week in the Buzy family. I'll kick off with a picture of our son's bike hat and a couple of xrays.

We moan about pot holes. Well Edd hit one, riding down a hill, on the other side of the world, a week ago and the pictures above show the after effects. He woke up in the middle of the road, in a world of pain. The para medics got him straight into a collar before moving him. The first we got was a text, from him, telling us his neck was broken but he was fine. I can almost laugh now but a week ago I really had no clue what to do.

He was conscious and sent us a video of his toes wiggling from his hospital bed, clearly in a lot of pain despite the drugs. After a full scan of all the effected areas the doctors recommended he have surgery to insert a metal pin into his C2 vertebrae, you can work out which one that is for your selves from the xray. His partner Marisa drove down overnight to be with him. Surgery was that day and surgeon said it had gone well.

Just a few days in hospital and he was allowed home. The first thing he wanted. Chocolate.

and more Chocolate.

Then to get out for a short walk.

This last picture is yesterday, just one week after he crashed. I doubt I will ever meet the passer by or the paramedics at the road side or the hospital team and surgeon that put him back together. But to each I will for ever be in their debt.

So next time you buckle a wheel on a pesky pot hole. Just get home and enjoy a bar of chocolate. Life is too precious to worry about them.

Glad he's doing ok.
Harking back to the fuel price/hooning debate.
Get out there today and enjoy yourself, for tomorrow you may hit a pothole.

Blimey Buzylar, he's one lucky fella it didn't turn out a LOT worse and that helmet probably helped!
I've had a few spills and thrills on the bikes in my time and I know the 'big one' is going to come sooner or later, but looking where you're going can mitigate some of that risk.
Get him down to specsavers before he gets back on that bike!
:poke:

He’s a lucky chap, my nephew was out on his mountain bike with some mates & one of them collided with a tree right in front of him and he’ll never walk again. Life can be very fragile.

So glad this didn’t end the way it might have done. We hit a pothole a few weeks ago which destroyed a tyre and we thought that was bad enough. What really bugs me is the attitude of local authorities. Their one thought is to avoid paying for the damage their negligence has caused. There is no sympathy for the injured party. Hopefully your son will make a complete recovery.

Yes, if ever the phrase pot luck needed an example, I think he has provided it. I gather from several conversations this week, that he has been extremely fortunate to break that particular bone, the way he did and now walk away from it. So many things could have changed the outcome, but so far they have all gone in his favour. I have not seen the after xrays yet. But I can barely fathom the skills of the team that can insert a metal pin into our sons neck right next to his spinal cord.

Sounds like you need Chocolate.

Glad there’s been a good outcome  Wishing him a full and speedy recovery, helmet’s a must imo whenever out on the bike.

I’ve had a few big spills but no injuries that bad thankfully.

Glad everything appears to be mending well  Where was he - New Zealand? Must have been very worrying for you.

Thx. Yes he lives in Wellington. One of the first thoughts you have is, I need to be there. None too simple with the world the way it is and then what use are you when you get there. So that idea canned and for once in my life appreciating the technology of our modern world. :)

You are right. The problem is we already eat too much chocolate.😀

It must have been a massive relief for you and Mrs buzy when you saw the first photo of your son up and about! I wish him all the best for a speedy recovery.

Glad your boy is doing OK Mr G. I am pleased he went for the Lindt bunny (as I make my living from Messrs Lindt & Sprungli), but not so happy about the Toblerone. :D

Cheers. :) Would have been the Toblerone for me. No plans to repeat our sons escapades to prove that though. :P

A good outcome to a bad event!

Keep him on the road to recovery.

Agreed. Not much any parent can say that he won't have worked out for himself. Marisa, his partner, is a doctor. As is her farther. I think sufficient advice will be forth coming from all sides. But mostly I think the memory of what occurred over this past week will live with him for more than long enough to keep him in check for some time. In the end though I know he is his farther son. So it won't stop him getting back to full speed when body and life permit.

Quick update. Edd saw the specialist today and told his neck has fused properly and he can take his neck brace off. Also told he can now drive again. :D :D :D :D :D :D
