Footwell speakers

6.5” is the max that will go in..will need some cutting and adapting of the mount and the kick panels..
 
The existing woofer is circular within an odd shaped plastic surround. To the best of my knowledge there are no off-the-shelf direct fit options available anywhere. You'd need a woofer speaker, and then either adapt your existing surround or manufacture one yourself to fit.
I'm pretty sure the original woofer is 6" :thumbsup:
 
Then you'll need to do some fabrication to achieve this.

Stupid question coming...... Why? It's a woofer for a reason, your midrange and tweeters are specifically mounted in the doors and rear 1/4 panel, and there are many upgrades available already in the correct size.
 
The whole basic system is just rubbish. Just debating which road to head down at this stage. There is very little punch that comes from those subs in the footwell. A bigger coaxial would give better performance and deliver a crisper solution

Ahh, right I see what you are trying to do. Personally you're barking at the wrong tree.
My first upgrade was the headunit, the basic version is pants. The upgraded version has a more powerful internal amplifier.
secondly I upgraded the midranges and added tweeters to the doors. These two alone gave a much improved sound quality.
I've recommended the Vibe Powerbox65.4BMW3 to a few people. It's a plug-n-play amplifier that requires no cutting or modifying of the cars speaker system at all....

To this you can add their matched subwoofer as well.
This keeps the cost and work down and gives you instant improvements.

There are plenty of other off-the-shelf options available, personally I opted to retrofit the 676 Business system on mine to give 14 speakers that include the OE Subwoofers behind the seats. It's relatively straightforward, but does require quite a lot of modification to the speaker system.
 
Dave my plan was to.put in the vibe amp. Replace the footwell subs with larger coaxial and install 6x9 behind the seats. I was also going to add a coaxial in the empty space in the dash so a 5 speaker setup.
 
I'd concur with AnubisZed..a decent woofer fed by an appropriate signal would be the best solution..complete waste of time for several reasons to put a mid range /coaxial in..IMHO

They are woofers not subs..

Better to put some decent after market speakers in the door cards / tweeter covers as well / instead off

If you have a DSP then a centre speaker is good for speech etc..

As others have said, Ffor the foot well speakers, there’s little to be gained from coaxial speakers, the tweeter is effectively lost. I followed the general advice here, but cut a plywood mount (detailed in other threads I can’t find, but will post if I do). EBay sell wiring adapters so you can leave the original connectors in place

Second edit - this may not be the best route given the options available, but the above is a sensible way of adding them if you do.
 
Seeing as you are considering the vibe amp anyway, why not add this & see where you stand?

In my experience, just the amp transforms the car audio massively from the stock system. The speakers are not as rubbish as you think they are - it's the signal that is dire.

You might get what you are looking for from a quite simple change, if not, keep going with speaker replacement.

I did go a little further (because I could) - fitting some coaxial mids in the front from match, and then the rear head level speakers from a mini cooper (plug & play). Good enough for me, never bothered with the footwell woofers.

Very sensible advice! Both the OEM speakers and amp are underpowered - or at best not a great match, so replacing either / or will improve the sound. When I was looking how to tackle improving the audio, it was a coin toss on what was best - the internet suggested one of the other, but the general consensus was either is a good start.
