Footwell Lamp

I noticed that the footwell lamp in the passengers side wasn't working. When I prised it out of the mounting expecting to see a festoon lamp I was suprised to find a quite elaborate assy. It was easy to establise why it didn't work - there was nothing connected to it! The tray was removed and the wire and its plug hidden behind the carpet! I wonder how long its been like that?

I didn't expect that - but its nice when things go right!

My passenger footwell had also been disconnected when i bought my car... and i thought the wire had been ripped away - as i couldnt find it, so i bought a connecter off BMW in the hope to crimp it to the working drivers side.. however with a bit more digging aroud i found the connecter tucked back amoung all the wires!

I'll bet there will be a rush of people checking their lamps now! :D
I wonder whether it was just a production batch or is this the norm? My car is a Mar 2004

ooops just noticed yours is 2008! so it's not one production run is it?

I should say that the wire and its connector seemed to be deliberately tucked away - it didn't seem to have been disconnected ie at a lamp change, and dropped into position that I found it in.

probably disconnected by dealer at some point so they could keep the doors open without draining the battery.

I don't think so as:-

Why only passenger side and also the cable and its plug were very neatly tucked away?

More likely an assy worker with a sense of humour :D

This could explain it, as often in the dealership i was in they have one door open, with the car specs beside it... as it does look intentionally tucked away.. so much so that i only found it after i had already run a wire from my drivers side one; However the light does go off after 5 mins or so, so what is the point of disconnecting it?! :?

do all cars have the footwell lamps?

Maybe all 3.0l or those with the comfort pack? not sure.. but I have been in my friend 2.0 and that didnt have it.

took the pannel off today- wires all there- how many lights do you have on the drivrs side as there is 3 holes?
There is also a wire coming down that i think may be for the passengr airbag cutoff!

I've not looked at the drivers side as there was a light that worked! I'll reckon there's only one each side - I'll have a look tomorrow (its in the garage and the door is too close to the wall to see properly!)

The lamp assy in the footwell tray is about 60 x 15

If you have a lamp assy and it's not connected then I'm sure that the flying lead with the small plastic connector (passengers side) will be for the lamp.

There is only one light each side... the driver side also has the obdc port, had my drivers panel off countless times now.. between this, hardwiring my roadangel and changing these bulbs to an LED board.!
