Football atmosphere

We were at Cardiff yesterday following the canaries as always. Wonderful classic "game of two halves". Last year was similar but with the opposite result. The main difference was the atmosphere or mainly lack of. I watched the football league show on television this morning noticing lots of empty seats.
Has the game now lost its attraction?

I used to go a lot to watch the Villa, but I won't go now as there's no such thing as safe parking at grounds.....and I don't do public transport!! :D

I go to a Newcastle games (my team) and the occasional Brighton Away game (my brother in laws team) and I find the atmosphere great at both and completely different to Scottish football matches where there seems to be an air of violence. I've never felt threatened at an English game but have been physically threatened en route to Murrayfield for a 6 nations game by a Hearts 'supporter' because he didn't like my white jacket with slight green piping. Scottish football is rife with sectarianism and I'm doubtful it will ever be eradicated and it's bred into some from an early age unfortunately.

I assume the lack of support was from the home fans? Maybe disillusioned with the goings on over the past what 8-12 months if not more and are protesting with their feet?

I have to say it's quite a bit of money too to travel especially if it's a game a long way from home. We always end up staying over when we travel but what I have noticed is I pay more at Brighton games than I paid for home games against the top tier clubs when Newcastle was in the Championship (not that long ago) and it was even the same back then too. I used to ask if I was buying a section of the ground too. Clearly they expect southerners to cough up more as if they've not already paid enough to travel that far!

Yes, it was the home support. Also, unbelievably, a huge amount of them left with more than 10 minutes left at 2-3 down. This led to the Norwich fans enquiring if there was a fire drill!

Hmmm. Blokes who don't like football are odd. Therefore, you must have been hit in the face as a child by a wayward free kick when you were put in goal against your wishes?

Why do people come on to a thread about football atmosphere when they don't like football? If you don't go this thread is of no interest to you. We're not interested in whether you like the sport or not. It's clearly aimed at people who do and those who attend matches!

Well said Guvnor. At least we haven't seen the one about 22 grown men and the bag of wind. Watch this space!

Couldn't agree more OG. One thing you can always guarantee on a footy thread is that people who don't like it will feel compelled to tell you!

On topic, the atmosphere at my particular church (Upton Park) has been pretty dead for the past 10 years. Now and again the crackle returns (don't you just love it when the crowd noise causes your ears to crackle?) but generally, the atmosphere at most grounds died when terraces were removed and large groups of mates could no longer stand together. Away days can still be a good crack though.

I've been going to watch Man Utd since 1977, not every game granted but when I can, sometimes the atmosphere at OT is rubbish, it changed noticeably when it became all seater, then the 3rd tear added, 70K+ people and sometimes it takes some getting going, an area of the ground gets going but it takes a while to come around the stadium, then there's signs that say ' no standing'' stewards asking you to sit down, I don't think it helps the atmosphere.

When I've watched United away the fans are amazing, always singing and loud, I'm going next Sunday against Leicester, are you going OG? Pre match drink? , there'll be a great atmosphere there guaranteed
