food sell by date

how important is food sell by date, in particular stuff in tins and bottles?

I am cooking with out of date Bolognese
 
we managed perfectly well before sell by dates which are probably the biggest reason for food waste we have , Taz just eat it and see, if sick you have found the use by date :D

Sell by date's are a way for shops to shift stock when the product might still be in a good way i.e. fine to eat. Like a loaf of packaged bread, which might not be as fresh but might just be a bit dry and won't kill you. Have to look at the thing and judge. Might be harder with your bolognese. Is it in a tin / jar?

:rofl: Haha yeap agree. We crossed posts. Well agree on the first part of the post, but wouldn't want Tazzy to get a horrible stomach :|. Get stephendutton to test it for you.
 
Maniac in jest makes a good point really use judgement smell etc. as for oakandacorns suggestion if only I liked bolognese :D plus Taz does not like cooking :D if he plays his cards right he may never have to again.
 
Never take any notice of dates so long as looks and smells ok, any slight mould on bread I just scrape it off. Food wastage in this country is criminal along with people who throw food away due to expiry dates. It's surprising how long some foods can last.
