You have a duff spark plug.

Couldnt this be the old VANOS seals problem? My mate has an E36 328i - Admittedly its been to the moon (150K) but is VERY hesitant at these rpm's under partial throttle due to the VANOS seals perishing. Is it ok at Full Throttle?

Coil pack or spark plug breaking down seem possible culprits. The M54 does its best work over 3.5krpm :driving:

Go to this site and read the symptoms. If they are similar to yours then the Vano's O-rings are the culprit. Just, be advised that the cold idling symptoms that are reported on this site does NOT manifest itself on the Zed's M-54 engine.

Not saying that this is the problem, but you can decide that.

When were spark plugs, oil, air filter etc all changed?

Is this in sport mode or normal, or both?

Up to operating temp, or during warm up cycle?

How many miles does your engine have on it?

Shirley if VANOS isn't reacting as the sensor/ecu demands, then a fault code is logged?

Full service in Nov08 BMW
can be in any mode
full temp

Pretty much identical to mine then... which had an insp2 at 58k at about the same time as you, so new plugs + oil + air filter.

Hmmmm... doesn't sound 100% right then.

I have noticed, for the first one or two full throttle but low rev accelerations mine sort of skips for half a second, ie, 1st/2nd then into 3rd out of a junction when it's still stone cold at say 20mph, and it does it. But it only does it once or twice and then is perfectly smooth right through.

Not sure if it's throttle sensor related (doesn't it auto-range/calibrate every time it starts!?) or just calibrations keeping it smooth/clean during that cold start period.

I'd possibly have a play with the throttle when it does it. Go WOT, and then back to part throttle and see what happens. Does it go fine, or does it fluff still etc...

I'll have a re-read of the VANOS operation specifics but it sounds more related to inputs/sensors than an actual mechanical fault as I'm sure the tech docs said any VANOS non-response to request would issue a fault code (iirc, need to re-read :) )

My 3.0 manual 53 reg Z4 is doing a silimar thing.

I would describe it as hesitant acceleration rather than fluffy ;-)

A few months ago i had a coil pack fail and i was told the others usually follow suit once one goes.

I recently noticed this hesitation when accelerating from a low speed and low revs, usually in 3rd gear.

It's fine most of the time though.

Mine has covered 45,000 miles and its due for an oil change in another 1,000 miles or so.

Having read around people mention coil packs, plugs and fuel filters...

I might just get the plugs replaced seeing as i've got new coil packs in it now..

Most 53 plate cars by now would have had an Insp2 with plugs, oil, filters etc done by now, so I'd just get an Insp2 early maybe :)

According to the computer in the car it's telling me an oil change is required in just under a 1,000 miles.

When is that inspection 2 usually due, taking into account the mileage of 45,000 miles?

Quick update
I have noticed i only get the odd splutter when the engine is warm i turn the engine off for ten minutes or so restart it temp guage still shows hot drive off a quick splutter thats it
