Just as a point how much do we send aboard to other countries in aid and help for disasters ?

As I live in Manchester I've not ben affected by the floods but correct me if I'm wrong.... Are the floods not a disaster ? So where's the aid and funding people in THIS country need ? And have needed since Xmas ?

Or am I just a little deranged from walking my whippet in the rain smoking woodbines with my flat cap on ?
:?

Hey just realised this is my 100th post yeah

I have changed my donation profile over the last few years, besides the usual cancer charities (UK), Children's causes (UK), British Heart Foundation, Age Concern etc, I no longer donate anything to the overseas charities anymore (got rather tired of funding India's space program).

I chose the UK aid programs now, like the mines disaster in Wales etc. Sometimes charity needs to start at home.

I've asked for years (a) is it only for the UK (b) how much reaches the intended charity, so very much on the same page

Not sure they are sorting London out 'first' are they; where's that info from? Perhaps people are confusing press coverage for flood aid.

On the plus side, if overall attention is heightened because economic epicentre London is at risk, then perhaps more will be done to protect the entire country as the people demand action on defences.

Firstly, I feel sorry for anyone going through this. It's horrible and upsetting as nobody likes their home being invaded by water, burglars or whatever. However I am hoping I am looking at the bigger picture when I say the following.
There was a woman - quite stressed, and therefore looking a little 'off kilter' - screaming "We need help NOW Mr Cameron". I wondered how loud she was screaming for the people on the somerset levels? If it hadn't happened in her village then I bet she'd be moaning about the tax increase to fund the flood defences of "That place we sometimes stop off in on the way to the Cornish Holiday Home". Nimbyism at its best, and what the aspiring middle classes are very good at in this country.

I do think that whilst some foreign aid may seem to be squandered, most of it is paid because we f***ed their countries over good and proper a hundred or more years ago and they haven't recovered yet.
Also when people mention not sending money to Syria, but diverting it to the floods is ridiculous.
In this country about 4000 homes are going to be repaired by the owner's insurers, within a few months, and people are moaning because they are leaving their houses, when the flooding has happened, after the government issued warnings telling them what was going to happen, and that they might like to leave their houses.

They are, however, a lot better off than if the RAF started bombing Somerset and Berkshire, followed by the Army shelling their villages, then rounding up all the men and shooting them. What would happen if the Government sanctioned a chemical attack on a school in Tavistock?
Imagine if it got so bad that the number of people who left the country in fear of their families lives was the equivalent to DOUBLE the population of Somerset and Berkshire combined.
Because that is what has happened and is happening in Syria.

I fear it might be a little more than a strongly worded letter to the Daily Express.

All IMHO.

On the news this morning, one of the people at risk was complaining that they had known this was going to happen for "a couple of months so why hadn't the government provided sandbags by now". I was left wondering what happened to self-help, and then saw this. Absolutely brilliant, thumbs up to this guy

Wow! I wanna be that guy!!

Yep, I was waiting for that. As soon as the millionaires on the Thames get threatened the government steps in big time, money no object.

I saw the Somerset 'King Canute' on the news tonight, what an inspiration to everyone. If athletes can get honours for winning races this guy deserves 10 knighthoods no question.

The government did step in many years ago they built the jubilee flood relief channel diverts flood water away from all the rich knobs in maidenhead but it diverts the water to just past windsor thats why datchet runnymeade egham staines and chertsey are all now underwater. what really gets up my nose is people buy a house near a river then moan when it floods, if you dont want wet feet every now and then dont buy a house on a flood plain! :headbang: . Im not sticking up for government i cant stand any of them biggest crooks in the country but goverment cant be blamed for the all the rain we've had

This x 10 million.

How anyone can seriously suggest that some flooded houses that were built on land that should never have been built on (because it always floods), is equivalent to 6 million people homeless and 160,000 civilian dead through genocide and war crime, is beyond comprehension.

I think that as a country we should always help other countries that have natural disasters. However when our own country has problems that they should be sorted out first and then we can go back to helping others.
