Flight Compensation

Can't help but wonder whether the amounts paid out in these claims is reasonable. I'm not questioning anyone's entitlement to claim, but £600 for a 12hr flight delay?!

This was my point earlier in this thread (a while ago this thread started I think :? )...

To me it is ridiculous that people are entitled to more than the flight cost, don't get me wrong I'm not saying people shouldn't claim... but how on earth people are entitled to be getting many times what their flights cost originally is beyond me... it's going to be hitting the budget airlines hard.

Where there's blame, there's a claim...!

Sad state of the world.

Not sure where the value of compensation comes from... unless you can prove you're out of pocket by the delay, I can't see how something which delays you is worth over a grand...!

It's specifically illegal for them to not inform you of your rights to this compensation at the point the flight is delayed or cancelled. From your earlier post it says they didn't. This could lead to very big fine for them. I suspect that might well be a reason you got the pay out.

It's also worth noting that if the flight is full and you get bumped to another this compensation is still payable. Even if you take a cash offer to move planes. So if they offer you say £250 to take the flight the next day, then you get this £250 plus any compensation due under the EU scheme.

@ADAMSKI its got nothing to do with travel insurance increasing, i agree that maybe the amount of compensation is ridiculous, when i first read about it i presumed i would of got the lowest amount.

end of the day, thomas cook knew they weren't sending a plane, notified all the package customers to stay in the hotels, let us travel to airport, sit for 10 hours in a sweaty office at the back of airport, i have't flew with them since 2008 since that holiday..

like you say the compensation is bittersweet, your entitled to it, but company struggling

I agree the level of compensation does seem ridiculous. But it is what the EU have ruled you are entitled to. In many cases I imagine the level of comp would outweight the cost of the flights, but that is the EU for you. I would rather a grand in my back pocket than in theirs whether I think it is wrong or not!

Nothing to do with travel insurance, it is the airlines which cough up. If many people start claiming it will push fares up though.

Another way of petty crooks getting a free ride.

That's a bit harsh. If I travel for work and get a cancellation resulting in rescheduling that's bloody expensive and disruptive to my personal life and business.

If I'm on vacation and the airline wastes a day of it that's cost me money, often a lot more than the cost of the flight, in having a lost day of pay plus all the other rubbish that goes with planning a holiday.

If you have a smack in the car, you'll often claim consequential losses like time off work to sort repairs etc. Why is this any different?

The price of holidays and length of flights and turnaround times will simply go up to compensate for this.........and people will then moan about the escalating cost of the holidays......
