Flashing/coding experts Cornwall

Hello forum members,

Does anyone know of anyone/anywhere to go in the Cornwall or southwest area that is competent with the BMW standard tools package?

I'm having issues with changing VIN number for replacement (compatible with my vehicle) airbag modules.

From reading the numerous threads on this topic I gather there can be a variety of reasons for why this may be.

Any help or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Mike

What part number module do you have? I've encountered some that don't quite work as advertised.

I'm going to Perranporth for Xmas if you can wait.

Hello and thanks for the swift response!

B-Pillar module part no. 65776962887 is the replacement part.

65776940299 was the original faulty part causing an airbag light according to INPA

I thought I'd manage to successfully change the VIN but it only shows ?????? where the VIN should be. Now I'm getting other codes relating to both B-Pillar modules and the SIM!

More than happy to wait until Christmas as I'm not likely to have sorted it by then
:)

Do you mean VIN, or is it the Part Number in INPA that is showing yyyy?
If you plug your old one back in can you read the part number of that? If so, is it the same as the part number on the label?
If it has been changed before it may have been coded to the latest version (65 77 697 4366)
If that is the case then you may have to find a '4366' module. I had a similar issue with this only a couple of weeks back, although Realoem said it was compatible, it wouldn't accept a module earlier than the software currently installed in the car.

I am assuming you are using WinKFP to change the VIN, followed by NCS Expert and Tool32 if you ever get that far?

If the other codes say 'Timeout' then don't worry, they will clear. It is because the modules send regular check messages to each other. If they don't get one (because you are tinkering with the module) then they will flag a timeout. Happens every time. You just go back in at ther end and clear them all.

Sorry yes it's the part number that shows ????

I believe a previous owner must have tackled this problem before as the module that was fitted when I got the car has already been coded to the latest version (4366).

I used winKFP to change the VIN, seemed pretty straightforward but I could never get any further.

The other codes all seem to relate to failure to communicate with the module(s).

I'll have a look and see if I can get hold of a "4366" module or even a full set of latest part numbers.

OK, well it does sound the same as the issue I had.
As I said, don't worry about the other comms faults as hopefully they should all clear.

Also a good chance there is nothing wrong with the replacement module you have, so don't bin it!

There's a high chance I've somehow messed it up so I'm leaving it as is until someone more in the know has a play!

Is it normal to only be able to flash and reprogram a module once as per a message that popped up when using winKFP?

I often get that but never seems to have caused an issue

Ok that's helpful, thank you. I'll carry on with checking every bit of wiring and connectors to do with the whole airbag and restraint system in the meantime just to rule out anything else.

Thanks again for your help so far
:)

@Mike1985 - did you ever get this sorted?

I'll be in Perranporth from 23rd December to 1st Jan.
If you see this in time and still need help, let me know and I'll bring my laptop down, and any spare modules if you need them.

@enuff_zed Thanks for reaching out, I was going to ask on the weekend if you were still heading this way.

I have not sorted the issue, I've left it alone and clung on to the hope that you would still be coming down to Cornwall!

In the meantime I have managed to source some compatible spare modules and still have all original parts available.

I'm around the whole time you are down so whenever works best for you.

Thanks again.

I’ll pm you my number and we can sort something out

@enuff_zed , your a Bloody legend mate :) hope you had the best Christmas ever!!!

I was down in Cornwall a few months back for 2 weeks, fell in love with the rolling hills on day one, the farm shops on day 2 and then got brought back to reality when a couple of hundred meters in, seemingly the narrow town road turned one way, and had to back out as there were 4 other cars behind the other bloke.. I thought he was gonna yell at me for driving down a one way street, but he didn’t, just gave me a friendly wave and on he went, only to leave me to discover it was indeed a 2 way street.. I shudder to think how that would work if you were a semi driver there lol.. freaking amazing part of the world.. but the beer needs to be colder. ;)

Hopefully meeting Mike Sunday afternoon to sort his car.
We are down here in a 5-series touring. Bloody awful thing to drive or park in this area. Would love to be in my zed but all you’d be able to see would be the hedgerows. 🤣

All sorted. Both left and right satellite modules were good but needed coding. That was easy enough, then found issues with the SIM85. Had codes for the airbag isolation switch which this car doesn’t have. Investigation showed it wasn’t the original module so it looks like someone had got a replacement from an isofix car. It held the right vin but the system time was wrong. Took a flyer and completely recoded it from scratch. Worked! No lights on.
So I ran away quickly 🤣
